Underdog Parks has reached the third round in Australia for the first time.
The first Grand Slam of the year has reached its third-round stage. In one of the encounters of the Australian Open 2024, World No. 4 Coco Gauff will square up against another American, No. 82 Alycia Parks.
Gauff went to the third round of the 2024 Australian Open, maintaining her perfect record for the season with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 victory in straight sets over fellow American Caroline Dolehide. On the other hand, Parks advanced to the third round of a major tournament for the first time, defeating 32nd seed and former US Open champion Leylah Fernandez 7-5 6-4 in 1 hour and 43 minutes.
Coco Gauff vs Alycia Parks preview
The reigning US Open champion, Coco Gauff, is unmatched on the WTA Tour in terms of speed and court coverage, as she demonstrated in her victory in the Australian Open second round. Caroline Dolehide tested Gauff’s quickness, discipline, and court coverage, in which the American prevailed. The 19-year-old Gauff was forced to wait patiently for her chances to score since Dolehide’s strong forehand kept her in the game.
The rising star overcame a wobble in the opening set to defeat Dolehide in their all-American match and advance to the third round. In the end, Dolehide scored 17 winners to 41 unforced errors, while Gauff concluded with 20 winners to 26 unforced errors. After an hour and forty-four minutes on Margaret Court Arena, she has now won nine straight grand slam matches and advanced to an undefeated 7-0 to open the 2024 season.
Talking about her opponent, Parks, who lost in the second round of qualification in both 2022 and 2023, is making her debut in the Australian Open main event. With 30 wins to Fernandez’s nine, Parks prevailed in the end and her racquet aces accounted for thirteen of those winners. The 23-year-old, who is participating in Melbourne’s main draw for the first time, is anticipating that her debut WTA tour match against Gauff won’t end in early elimination like her past majors.

Prediction
World No. 4 Gauff has had an incredible start to the year, losing just one set in her first seven matches as she advanced to the third round of the Australian Open. Meanwhile Parks, she is a gifted ball striker with a powerful serve, but her inconsistent play undermines her inherent abilities.
However, Gauff’s defensive strategies will be put to the test when she goes up against the extremely aggressive tennis style of her opponent, who is four years older. While Parks, who reached a career high ranking of 40 last year, still has room for improvement, her serve is still among the biggest on the circuit, and despite her tendency to make mistakes, her groundstrokes are strong, and she enjoys playing in faster circumstances.
It is for sure that she will not let Gauff win so easily. However, the 19-year-old recently experienced her first Slam. She is among the top favourites to win the title in Melbourne and well experienced at the majors as compared to her opponent.
Result: Coco Gauff to win in straight sets.
