Aryna Sabalenka is the defending champion

Aryna Sabalenka, the defending champion, will take on Zheng Qinwen, the surprise finalist, in the Australian Open 2024 women’s singles final on Saturday.

Sabalenka cruised to the semifinals without dropping a set, beating Ella Seidel, Brenda Fruhvirtova, Lesia Tsurenko, Amanda Anisimova, and Barbora Krejcikova. She then faced Coco Gauff, who defeated her in the US Open final last year. Sabalenka prevailed in a tight first set, winning the tie-break after losing a 5-2 lead. She then broke Gauff in the second set to seal a 7-6(2), 6-4 victory.

Zheng, on the other hand, had a remarkable run to the final, defeating Ashlyn Krueger, Katie Boulter, Wang Yafan, Oceane Dodin and Anna Kalinskaya. She met Dayana Yastremska, a qualifier from Ukraine, in the semi-finals. Zheng recovered from a slow start and a 2-0 deficit to win the first set. She then broke Yastremska in the second set to clinch a 6-4, 6-4 win and reach her first Grand Slam final.

Sabalenka and Zheng have met once before, at the US Open quarter-finals in 2023, where Sabalenka won in straight sets. Sabalenka will be aiming for her second Grand Slam title, while Zheng will be hoping for a historic upset.
