While Djokovic remains the outright favourite, the younger generation has shown they can be worthy challengers.
As the Australian Open 2024 kicks off on January 14, the tennis world is buzzing with anticipation for the first Grand Slam of the year. The hard courts of Australia will witness some of the best players in the world compete in various categories, under the blazing sun.
The men’s singles category is especially intriguing, with a stellar lineup of exquisite talents. Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and other big names in men’s tennis will face high expectations from their fans and rivals. The Australian Open has always been a stage for thrilling matches and dramatic moments, and this year promises to be no different, with a fierce level of competition in the men’s singles draw.
Predicting the winner of the men’s singles title is a daunting task, given the quality and depth of the field. However, these five players stand out as the favorites to go deep into the tournament and possibly lift the coveted trophy.
On that note, here are the top five title favorites in men’s singles at the Australian Open 2024!
Favourites to win men’s singles title at Australian Open 2024
5. Stefanos Tsitsipas
Stefanos Tsitisipas reached the final of the Australian Open 2023 but lost to the prodigious Novak Djokovic. While the year 2023 as a whole blew hot and cold, the seventh-seeded Greek superstar will aim to hit the ground running this year.
Having reached the final of the men’s singles bracket last year will be a motivational factor for Tsitsipas who will aim to go one step better this time around.
4. Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev has momentum heading into the Australian Open 2024. He won 66 matches in 2023 and looks set to carry that run into 2024.
Playing under a neutral flag, the 27-year-old will be desperate to finally win the title where he has reached the final on two previous occasions in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
3. Jannik Sinner
Jannik Sinner, the world No. 4, is one of the hottest prospects in men’s tennis. The 22-year-old Italian had a sensational 2023 season, leading his country to its first Davis Cup title and clinching his maiden ATP Masters 1000 trophy at the Canadian Open.
He also stunned Novak Djokovic twice, in the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup semifinals, proving his ability to challenge the best. Sinner will be aiming to continue his impressive form in 2024 and claim his first Grand Slam crown.
2. Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz, the rising star of Spanish tennis, is ready to make his mark at the 2024 Australian Open. The 20-year-old is the second seed and the world No. 2, trailing only Novak Djokovic in the ATP Rankings.
Alcaraz has had a remarkable ascent in the past two years, winning two Grand Slam titles at the 2022 US Open and the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. He also claimed four Masters 1000 titles and became the youngest player to top the singles rankings in the Open Era.
However, the Australian Open has been a tough challenge for Alcaraz, who has never gone past the third round in Melbourne. He missed the tournament last year due to a hip injury, which also sidelined him for most of the season.
1. Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic continues to defy logic with his dominance of the tennis world at 36 years of age. The Serbian superstar has won a record 24 Grand Slam singles titles, including 10 Australian Open crowns.
He is the defending champion in Melbourne, having beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in last year’s final.
