While Djokovic dropped a set in both of his match, Etcheverry won both in straight sets.

Novak Djokovic will face Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the men’s singles third round of Australian Open 2024. Djokovic is a 10-time winner here at Melbourne Park and looks comfortably placed to go all the way, the length of the first two rounds notwithstanding.

The Serbian broke plenty of records in the 2023 season and looks to do more of the same in 2024. His Grand Slam tally stands at 24, and he finished as World No. 1 for a record eighth year.

Etcheverry reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, beating Alex de Minaur (2nd round) and Borna Coric (3 round) before losing to Alexander Zverev in quarterfinals for his best Grand Slam result. He reached the finals of the ATP 250 event in Houston, where he lost to Frances Tiafoe in two tiebreaks.

Novak Djokovic vs Tomas Martin Etcheverry Preview

Djokovic had to contend with playing two four-set matches in the opening rounds of the Australian Open 2024. The 187th-ranked Croatian, Dino Prizmic, was unfazed by losing the first set and took the second set in a tiebreak. Djokovic pocketed the next two sets to book a match against Alexei Popyrin and took another bumpy path to victory.

But he managed to hold off home favourite Alexei Popyrin for a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 win inside the Rod Laver Arena. Djokovic was in danger of losing the third set but rallied to save four set points from 0/40 at 4-5 before pressing on to a second-round victory. A rematch of the US Open semi-final with Ben Shelton is likely in the fourth round.

Etcheverry, in contrast, came through his first two rounds without much worry, winning both in straight sets. Etcheverry saw off veteran Scot Andy Murray and France’s Gael Monfils, winding up both matches in less than 2 hours, 30 minutes.

The real challenge for the Argentinian is Djokovic, who will be looking to claim his 11th Australian Open title and win his fifth since 2019.

Prediction

The Serbian has made the hard courts of Melbourne Park his own and has the most wins of any male player. Roy Emerson and Roger Federer are in second place with six titles apiece. Should he win at Melbourne this year, he will draw alongside Margaret Court, who has 11 titles. The hiccups Djokovic has had in the first two rounds may give reason for Etcheverry to fancy his chances against the all-conquering Serbian.

Result: Novak Djokovic to win in four sets.
