Sabalenka became first woman since Victoria Azarenka to clinch back-to-back Australian Open crown
On Saturday, Aryna Sabalenka defended her Australian Open title and claimed her second Grand Slam trophy by crushing Zheng Qinwen, the 12th seed from China, with a 6-3 6-2 win at the Rod Laver Arena. The Belarusian played flawlessly throughout the match and became the first woman to win back-to-back titles at Melbourne Park since Victoria Azarenka, her fellow countrywoman, in 2013.
Sabalenka gained an early advantage in the first set and held off three break points to lead 3-0. Zheng improved her serve in the first set compared to her previous six matches, but could not keep up with the power and pace of the Belarusian who easily won the first set. The second set followed the same pattern, as Sabalenka broke Zheng early and led 4-1 before securing the victory on her fifth match point.
Sabalenka will receive AUD 3,150,000 (Around 17 crores) and 2,000 points for her triumph, while Zheng will get AUD 1,750,000 (Around 9.5 crore) and 1,300 points for her impressive run to the final.
