Serbian can break as many as four record in Australian Open

The 2023 season was full of drama and excitement, as the established stars and the rising talents competed for glory. After a short off-season, the players are back in action at the Australian Open 2024, the first Grand Slam of the year.

Novak Djokovic made history by winning the US Open in 2023, matching Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles. But the Serbian is not satisfied yet, as he has more records to break and milestones to achieve.

As 2024 begins, Djokovic is on the verge of new feats or surpassing old ones. Read on to find out how the tennis legend can further cement his legacy.

Djokovic within arm’s reach of 25th Grand Slam

Djokovic was one set away from winning his 25th Grand Slam at Wimbledon last year, but Carlos Alcaraz stopped him from making history. Six months later, Djokovic’s goal is still the same. The victory would make him the first player in tennis history, male or female, to win 25 Grand Slams. He is currently tied with Margaret Court, but 11 of her 24 majors were in the Open Era (after 1968), while 13 were in the Amateur Era. It would be another achievement to add to his already unparalleled career.

Continuation of his reign as No. 1

Djokovic ended 2023 as the year-end No.1 for an unprecedented eighth time, and he has the record for the most weeks as World No. 1 with 407. His fate for week number 408 will be decided in the next two weeks at the Australian Open. The Serbian has 98 titles to his name, only five behind Roger Federer, and eleven behind the record-holder Jimmy Connors. Connors’ record of 109 seems out of reach for Djokovic, but Federer’s record of 103 is not.

Consecutive wins at Melbourne Park

Djokovic has won 28 matches in a row at Melbourne Park since 2019. He also has a perfect record of 10-0 in finals at the Australian Open. If Djokovic reaches the final, he will surpass both Monica Seles (33 wins) and Roy Emerson (30 wins) for the most consecutive wins at the Australian Open. The last person to beat Djokovic was Hyeon Chung from South Korea in 2018.

Consecutive semifinal appearances

If Djokovic reaches the quarterfinals or further at the first slams of the year, he will equal Federer’s record of 58 quarterfinal appearances. He will also be the oldest man to win the title since Ken Rosewall from Australia. Djokovic will be 36 years and seven months old on the final day, while Rosewall was 37 years and two months old.
