Indian Sports Calendar 2024: Events to watch in final week of January

Vishnu Sarvanana will be eying an Olympic Quota at the ILCA 7 World Championships.

The first month of the Indian sports calendar in 2024 is about to end soon and India had a good first month. Indian women’s hockey team failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics after a heartbreaking loss against Japan. On the other hand, the shooters did extremely well to win quota places for Paris 2024. Satwik and Chirag became World No. 1 in badminton. Rohan Bopanna clinched his second career grand slam title and maiden in men’s doubles. The 43-year-old also became the World No. 1 in ATP doubles rankings.

With just five months left approximately for the Olympics, the athletes are trying hard to do well and qualify for the Olympics. The major tournaments that will be happening in the last week of January are the ILCA 7 World Championships which will offer an Olympic Quota, the ICC U19 men’s World Cup and the Men’s FIH Hockey5s World Cup.

Here are the major events to watch in the final week of January in the Indian Sports Calendar (January 29 – 3 February).

Athletics

The Racewalking team will be in action at the 1st South Asian and Indian Open Race on January 30-31.

Badminton

Post Indonesia Masters, the badminton caravan has moved to Thailand as the Thailand Masters (Super 300) tournament will commence on January 30 and will end on February 4. The eyes will be on Tressa Jolly/Gayatri Pullela and Ashwini Ponappa/Tanisha Crasto, among other Indian shuttlers, who will be eyeing for a title finish at Bangkok.

Boxing

The Indian boxers will eye a good performance at the season opener which will start from 2nd February.

Cricket

The major cricket tournament being conducted in the fourth week of January is the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024. The Indian young guns will eye the nation’s sixth title. Indian, led by Uday Saharan, has already qualified for the Super Six stage and are currently on top. The top two sides from each group will qualify for the semifinals.

Meanwhile, the senior Indian cricket team will play England in Visakhapatnam in the second of the five-match Test series. India were beaten by 24 runs in the series opener.

Football

The Indian Super League 2023-24 returned to action on January 31 for the second half of the season. The league stage matches will continue until April 14 which will be followed by the knockout round.

The Indian Golfers will be in action in Australia from January 30.

Hockey

Indian men’s hockey team will feature in the inaugural edition of the Men’s FIH Hockey5s World Cup. The format is such that the first two teams from each group will proceed to the quarterfinals. India beat Switzerland and Jamaica to qualify for the quarterfinals where they are set to face Netherlands. The women’s team had a good outing last week finishing as the runner-up at the tournament.

Judo

The Indian judokaa will be in action at the Grand Slam De France from 2nd February. Avtar Singh, Yamini, Vijay Yadav, Himanshi Tokas, Ashmita Dey and Shradda Chopade will be in action.

Sailing

The upcoming week will see two important sailing events — the ILCA 7 Men’s World Championships in Australia, and iQFOiL World Championships in Spain. Both events are crucial as there will be Paris Olympics 2024 quotas up for grabs in these competitions.

  • January 26-03 February: iQFOiL World Championships (Ongoing)

Shooting

The Indian shooters will be aiming for a medal rush at the ISSF World Cup 2024 taking place in Cairo, Egypt. It is important to note that this event won’t be providing quota places for the Paris Olympics 2024.

Squash

India’s rising star Abhay Singh will be participating at the Sturbridge Capital Motor Open.

Swimming

World Swimming Championships will be happening in Doha from 2nd February to 18 February. The Indian swimmers will look to create some new records.

  • February 2-18: Swimming World Championships

Tennis

India will take on arch-rivals Pakistan at the Davis Cup World Group 1 Playoffs.
