Rohan Bopanna joined the elite club of multiple Grand Slam titles

The Grand Slam is the most coveted prize in tennis. There are four Grand Slam events every year: the Australia Open in January, the French Open in May, Wimbledon in July, and the US Open in August. They are played on hard, clay, and grass courts respectively. Rohan Bopanna achieved his second Grand Slam victory and his first in Men’s doubles on Saturday, partnering with Matthew Ebden.

They beat the Italian duo of Bolleli/Vavassori in two sets (7-6,7-5). This was also India’s first Grand Slam win in seven years. Bopanna is one of the four Indians who have won more than one Grand Slam title, along with Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupatti, and Sania Mirza

Let us look at the Indian Tennis players who have won multiple Grand Slam titles.

Leander Paes (18 Grand Slams)

With 18 grand slam titles, Leander Paes is the most successful Indian tennis player ever and holds the record in the sport’s history. He has 8 men’s doubles and 10 mixed doubles titles to his name. He reached 34 Grand Slam finals in both men’s and mixed doubles, which is tied for the second-most among men.

He is one of only three men in the Open era to complete a career Grand Slam in both men’s and mixed doubles. He also achieved the rare feat of winning both men’s and mixed doubles at Wimbledon in 1999.

She formed a formidable duo with Marina Hingis (SANTINA) and together they claimed 3 consecutive grand slam titles in 2015 and 2016. She also rose to the world No. 1 ranking in the next year. They had an impressive run of 41 victories in a row, which is the second longest streak in women’s doubles in the Open Era

Rohan Bopanna (2 Grand Slams)

At the age of 43, Rohan Bopanna became the oldest tennis player to clinch a grand slam title, showing that age is no barrier. He and his partner Matthew Ebden triumphed at the Australian Open recently, giving Bopanna his second grand slam trophy. They bounced back from losing the 2023 US Open final to claim the title. Bopanna also made history by becoming the oldest player to reach the No. 1 ranking. His first grand slam title came in 2017 with his partner Gabriela Dabrowski in mixed doubles.
