Indian duo Rohan Bopanna and Ramkumar Ramanathan recorded a great upset by beating top seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo to clinch the doubles title in Adelaide International on Sunday.
This was the first time Bopanna paired up with Ramkumar and the unseeded Indian dup fought all odds to win an ATP 250 title. The Indian duo outclassed the top seeds, Dodig and Melo, 7-6 (6), 6-1 in the men's doubles finals.
The understanding and the mindset of both Indian stars matched and their camaraderie was on full show at the Adelaide International. The unseeded Indian duo took one step at a time as they had a major roadblock on the way in the second round match against American pair Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow. While the Americans took the first set, the Indian duo came roaring back to restore parity. However, it went on to a super tiebreaker where Bopanna and Ramkumar held onto their nerves to see out the game.
The next challenge en route to the final was in the semis when they took on the fourth seed of Santiago Gonzalez and Tomislav Brkic. The Mexican-Bosnian pairing looked a lot intimidating on paper than they were on the court as Bopanna and Ramkumar defeated them in straight sets.
The Indian pair faced top seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo in the final. Coincidentally, Bopanna had paired up with Ivan Dodig many times in the past and they knew much about each other. However, Ramkumar was in uncharted territory as this was his first-ever finals in an event of such magnitude.
This win at the Adelaide International marked Rohan Bopanna's 20th Doubles title on ATP Tour whereas Ramanathan Ramkumar marked his first.
Bopanna and Ramkumar will be hoping that this is just the start of something even greater in Australia as they gear up for the Grand Slam Down Under. This win will surely boost their morale to give their best at the upcoming Australian Open.
