Davidovich Fokina is the last Spaniard left in the main draw.

Alexander Zverev and Alejandro Davidovich, who will face off in the third round of the Madrid Open 2025, had no trouble in their respective opening round matches. Zverev, the top seed, breezed past Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 6-2, in just 70 minutes on Friday. Fokina followed suit later in the day with the 6-2, 6-3 win, taking 73 minutes.

Alexander Zverev extended his winning streak to six after the win over Agut and notched up his 24th victory in Madrid to set up the third-round meeting against Fokina. It was a clinical performance by the World No. 2 as he recorded 31 winners and 10 aces to defeat the Spaniard for the sixth time in a row.

Heading into his second successive match against a Spaniard, Zverev leads Davidovich Fokina 4-1, besides winning their only match on clay courts in the quarter-finals at the 2021 French Open.

The 28th-seeded Fokina made short work of Nuno Borges with a low-key yet reliable performance, and even the head-to-head rivalry with the Portuguese at 1-1. Fokina seized four of nine breakpoint opportunities to progress to the third round.

Preview

Alejandro Davidovich will look to delight local fans as he remains the only Spaniard left in the men’s singles draw. The Andalusian will take on two-time Madrid Open winner Alexander Zverev in the third round. The 25-year-old from Malaga recorded his best result at the event in 2023 when he made the fourth round but lost to Borna Coric.

In his sixth main draw appearance in Madrid, the Malaga native will be keen to break new ground at the La Caja Magica. Fokina has risen from 61st to 29th since January, reaching Delray Beach and Acapulco’s final. The Spaniard also reached the last four in Monte-Carlo earlier this month, which contributed to his rise in the ATP rankings..

Zverev will be confident of making the second week at the Madrid Open for the first time since 2022, thanks to his title run in Munich last week. The recently concluded BMW Open was his first title run since November 2024, when he claimed the Paris Masters title.

Match Prediction

The changes Fokina made to his coaching team at the end of last season appear to be paying off. The 25-year-old included Felix Mantilla and David Sanchez in his coaching team, a move that saw him reach two finals in the same season and for the first time since 2022.

Zverev has historically always performed well on clay, with nine titles coming on the surface and an 8-3 record on the surface this season. Fokina halted a three-match losing streak to Zverev in 2023 at the ATP Masters 1000 Canada for his first win against the German with a 6-1, 6-2 scoreline.

Fokina has slightly better numbers than Zverev on clay courts this season (6-2). But the World No. 2 from Hamburg has the edge thanks to a 25-6 record on clay over the past 52 weeks and a greater familiarity with the red dirt.

Result: Zvrerev will win in three sets.
