Sabalenka committed multiple disciplinary violations during her defeat to Rybakina

Aryna Sabalenka did not hide her displeasure when things were not going her way during the championship match at the 2026 US Open.

The Belarusian suffered her fifth Grand Slam final defeat, and second major loss of the 2026 season, at the hands of Elena Rybakina, who outplayed the top seed to clinch her maiden title in New York, ending Sabalenka’s three-peat aspirations.

From the first set itself, Sabalenka seemed to be all over the place. She got her first code violation in the opening set when she smashed a ball into the stands. Chair umpire Greg Allensworth cited ball abuse, while issuing the violation.

Later in the second set, Sabalenka hit the ball away in agony near the cameraman, which could have attracted harsh penalties if she had struck either the cameraman or the ball boys. The third set saw Rybakina break early, and Sabalenka kept muttering curse words to herself and her team.

As Rybakina closed things out with another ace, Sabalenka slammed her racquet and broke it. This constitutes court abuse and racquet abuse. She was later caught muttering the F-word to the camera, when it zoomed in on her while she was sitting with her team.

Sabalenka earned a massive $2,800,000 in prize money for finishing as the runner-up. However, she was penalised for her misconduct and violations during the final.

A total fine of $7,500 was levied on her, which means she walks away from Flushing Meadows with $2,792,500 in prize money before taxes.
