Aryna Sabalenka last played at the Berlin Ladies Open.
Aryna Sabalenka, the 2024 Australian Open Champion has been out of action for more than a month due to a devastating shoulder injury which kept her out of Wimbledon 2024. The Belarusian arrived at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club hoping to participate in the Grass Court Major but eventually had to pull out. During her visit, she even exchanged lighthearted dance videos along with Ons Jabeur.
The 26-year-old has already opted out of the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024 and hopes to make a comeback at the Citi Open which will serve as ideal preparation for the highly anticipated US Open, which is set to begin on August 26 and will run till September 8.
The two-time Grand Slam Champion recently took to her Instagram handle to update her fans about her recovery in a fun “Ask me a question” session. When one of the users inquired about her recovery, she shared the update many tennis fans were longing to hear, “My last ultrasound showed that my shoulder has healed, so I got to start playing tennis again this week.”
In some of her further stories, the 26-year-old discussed how she was spending her time away from tennis, along with her boyfriend, Georgios Frangulis, the CEO and founder of Oakberry Acai Bowls. She revealed that she was lucky enough to visit Greece with him.
“I am learning Portuguese and was lucky enough to travel to Greece! So, I Guess you could say I’m doing both… 😂 ,” Sabalenka responded to one fan.
If the Belarusian indeed participates in the 2024 Mubadala Citi Open, it would be her first appearance in the competition since 2017.
Sabalenka has had a fantastic 2024 season prior to her injury. At the beginning of the year itself, she notched up her second Grand Slam by winning the 2024 Australian Open, following which she played the final of the Brisbane International where she lost to Elena Rybakina. She finished as the runner-up in Madrid Open and Italian Open, losing to World Number #1 Iga Swiatek on both occasions.
Sabalenka last played on a hard court in 2023 during the US Open final where she lost to Coco Gauff, who won her maiden Grand Slam and became the first American teenager to do so since Serena Williams in 1999.
