There is a lot riding on this US Open for Aryna Sabalenka. A win gets her a third straight title, a feat no woman has been able to pull off since Serena Williams did it from 2012 to 2014.
Her No. 1 ranking is at stake too as current No. 2 Elena Rybakina only has to reach the semi-finals to take the top spot away from her. Moreover, Sabalenka is yet to win a Major title this year.
Before any of that got settled on court, her outfit had already taken over the conversation. Nike went with a basketball theme for her New York look—an orange sports bra and shorts under a black mesh jersey. Reactions were split as some fans were left unimpressed, while others liked the boldness of it.
The Belarusian wasn’t bothered either way. “Who cares what people think?” she told reporters, adding that Nike ties each of her Grand Slam outfits to something from the host country.

The jewellery got a warmer reception, and there’s a story behind it too. After her 15th straight US Open win, Sabalenka talked about what she’s been wearing on court.
Presenter: You have some beautiful jewelry around your neck and on your wrist. I think about seven jewels, if I’m not mistaken, custom-made. Can you tell me a little bit about it and what inspired you to create such a piece?
Aryna Sabalenka: “It’s 100% inspired by New York. The colours are bold, fun and vibrant, with a vintage look. There are different shapes, different stones, and literally, I feel like it describes New York perfectly. So, yeah, it’s New York.”
Sabalenka produced her most dominant performance recently in the second round of the US Open, beating Polina Iatcenko 6-1, 6-1 in under one hour. Up next is Kamilla Rakhimova in round three, a player the four-time Grand Slam champion has beaten in all three of their previous meetings.
