Sabalenka saved four match points to prevail over Rybakina in the quarter-finals.

The Berlin Open 2025 quarter-final between World No. #1 Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina was one of the best WTA matches of the 2025 calendar year. A gripping first set saw Sabalenka prevail in a tie-break, but the Kazakh struck back in the third set, breaking the Belarusian’s serve on three instances to force a decider.

At 4-4, the top seed succeeded in breaking Rybakina’s service and was serving for the match. However, the Kazakh did not give up and converted her second break point. In the tie-breaker, Rybakina produced some stunning tennis, and was at the cusp of a yet another win against a World No. #1.

At 6-2, the 2022 Wimbledon winner had four match points, but in a dramatic sequence of events, she ended up losing the contest, with the three-time Grand Slam champion winning six points in a row.

Preview

A victory against one of the best players on grass, and a former Wimbledon champion is certain to give Sabalenka with a lot of confidence, heading into the business stage of the Berlin Open and Wimbledon. After taking down Rybakina, the top seed faces another former Wimbledon winner, in Marketa Vondroušová.

The Czech missed the first few months of 2025 due to injury and lost to Jessica Pegula in the third round of Roland Garros. However, she has regained her mojo on her favourite surface, and is already proving to be a tricky customer.

On current form, Vondroušová could not be ruled out from potentially repeating her heroics from 2023 in Wimbledon, and a triumph in Berlin, would serve as the ideal preparation.

The 25-year-old defeated three prominent names on her path to the semi-finals, including Australian Open winner Madison Keys, #12th ranked Diana Shnaider and Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur, in the quarter-finals. While Sabalenka leads the h2h narrowly, the Czech had beaten the top seed when they met previously in Stuttgart 2024.

Match prediction

Sabalenka seemed down and out in her clash with Rybakina, but somehow found a way to win. While her aggresion is her weapon, she demonstrated remarkable defense and composure under pressure, and she will hope to improve her serving, which let her down at times against the Kazakh.

Vondrousova on the other hand, is improving with every passing match, and is extremely tough to beat, when she is in form. The Czech has taken down top seeds already in this tournament, and she has the ability to tackle Sabalenka’s power, by mixing it up and using her variation.

Given her better understanding of the conditions on grass, we back Vondrousova to stun the World No. #1 and book her spot in the finals of the Berlin Open 2025.

Result: Aryna Sabalenka to win in three sets.
