Aryna Sabalenka vs Polina Kudermetova prediction, betting tips & odds, head-to-head, preview: US Open 2025

Sabalenka is on 95 Grand Slam match wins.
Aside from Serena Williams, who completed a hat-trick of wins in 2014, only Naomi Osaka has won twice (2018 and 2020). If Sabalenka holds on to the title at Flushing Meadows, she will become the first woman to win the US Open back-to-back in over a decade.
Aryna Sabalenka has some unfinished business to settle in New York. The 2025 US Open is the World No. 1’s last opportunity to secure a Grand Slam this season. She won a pair of 1000-level titles in Miami and Madrid. A major title, however, has been elusive for the World No. 1.
Sabalenka, the top seed, survived a challenging first set against Rebeka Masarova to move into the second round on Sunday. The Belarusian defeated Swiss player Masarova 7-5, 6-1 for her 95th Grand Slam match win.
Masarova kept pace with the defending champion until 5-5 in the opening set. At this point, Sabalenka held serve and broke Masarova’s serve to take the opening set.
The Belarusian’s dominant forehand contributed 14 winners to her overall tally of twenty as she completed the win in 81 minutes to set up a second-round face-off with Polina Kudermetova.
Kudermetova advanced to the second round after Nuria Parrizas Diaz retired at 2-2 in the opening set. The 34-year-old Diaz twisted her ankle and was unable to continue despite receiving medical treatment.

Preview
Despite making the finals at Melbourne and Paris, she was denied the title both times by Americans Madison Keys and Coco Gauff. In the Wimbledon semi-finals, another American, Amanda Anisimova, conspired to deprive Sabalenka of a third straight Grand Slam title round appearance.
Sabalenka emerged victorious in New York last season to win her third Grand Slam singles title and maiden US Open title.
Along with it came the No. 1 ranking, which she has held on to for 44 weeks – her longest stint in the top spot. As of August 11, she has spent a total of 51 weeks as World No. 1 to equal her compatriot Victoria Azarenka’s stint as World No. 1.
The top seed will cross paths with Kudermetova for the second time this season. Their upcoming second-round clash follows their maiden tour-level at the Brisbane International finals earlier this year, which Sabalenka won in three sets.
At stake for Sabalenka during the US Open fortnight is the WTA No. 1 position itself. Her quarter-final exit in Cincinnati meant she could not defend her title, allowing Iga Swiatek to close in on the No. 1 position in the run-up to the US Open. The Pole claimed her maiden win in Ohio last week, defeating Jasmine Paolini for the title.

Match Prediction
Compared to last season, when Sabalenka lifted trophies at the Australian Open and the US Open, she could not be faulted for treating the 2025 season like a consolation prize.
Sabalenka will want to give it her all as she looks to defend her US Open title. The 27-year-old Sabalenka had to endure near misses at all three Grand Slams, despite making deep runs at each. Her opening round win over Rebeka Marasova was her 51st of the season.
A title run in New York will give Sabalenka her 57th match win of the season, an improvement over 2024. It will also hand the Belarusian her 100th Grand Slam match win. She shrugged off a slow start to prevail in her opening round over Masarova.
The Russian is nowhere near Sabalenka in terms of match wins in 2025. Kudermetova is on a 16-19 win-loss record in the ongoing season and is yet to make it past the second round since making the finals at Brisbane. Kudermetova’s strong serve alone is unlikely to halt Sabalenka’s progress into the third round.
Result: Sabalenka will win in straight sets.
