Daniil Medvedev secured his first win of ATP Finals 2024.
Daniil Medvedev and his iconic celebrations on the court witnessed a chapter in the making during ATP Finals 2024. After defeating Alex de Minaur in his second group stage match, Medvedev inserted his fingers in both ears and closed his eyes as the crowd kept cheering for him. On being asked about the viral celebration, he revealed that football stars had inspired him to do it.
Medvedev after registering the win over Minaur wrote on camera ‘block the noise’ with a smiley. The indication might have been with the backlash he received for his lackluster performance in the opening match against Taylor Fritz where he lost in straight sets. The Russian stated that he had wanted to block all the negativity and thus celebrated it with his fingers inside his ears.
Medvedev later posted an edited version of his viral celebration in which his eyes were opened. He posted the pic on Twitter as fans showered their love and support. Medvedev will be aiming to continue his form as he is part of the Ilie Nastase group in the season ending championship and will next face group topper Jannik Sinner.
The duo will be meeting for the 15th time on tour as they share seven wins each. Fans will be hoping Medvedev brings out his best yet again against Sinner. It will be their second clash at the event as Medvedev had defeated Sinner in the group stage match in 2021.
Daniil Medvedev reassures fans with dazzling win in ATP Finals 2024
Medvedev recorded his seventh victory over Minaur in their 10th meeting on the ATP tour. It was the pair’s second meeting this year as the Australian had beaten Medvedev in the fourth round of the French Open. But on this occassion Medvedev did not take much time to keep his semi-final hopes alive in the event.
He did not face a single breakpoint in the match which lasted for 78 minutes. Minaur could only win nine points against Medvedev’s serve in the match of which seven of them had come in the opening set. Medvedev kept his game sharp from the baseline as he hit 25 winners and came up to the net on 11 instances while winning eight of them.
It was an all round performance in a much needed situation from Medvedev at the indoor hardcourts of Inalpi Arena in Turin. His next battle will again enthrall the crowd as they will be expecting intense rallies throughout the match. Medvedev is hoping to end Sinner’s eight-match winning streak on the tour.
