Zverev had made a strong start in his quest for the elusive Grand Slam trophy.

Unlike Jack Draper and Daniil Medvedev, who were stretched by the competition to five sets, Alexander Zverev had an easy day at the office. He began his quest for the Australian Open trophy in convincing fashion with straight sets win over French wildcard Lucas Pouille. Medvedev was nearly the first seeded casualty on the opening day against World No. #418 Thai player Kasidit Samrej.

The German cranked out 18 aces and 40 winners en route to his opening-round win against Pouille in their maiden encounter on the ATP tour. The Frenchman’s 34 unforced errors and as many as seven double faults led to an early exit from Melbourne.

Zverev showed little discomfort from the bicep strain that led to his withdrawal from the United Cup tie against Kazakhstan. The World No. #2 competed the 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win in 2 hours, 21 minutes.

Up next for Zverev is Spaniard Pedro Martinez, who made the second round after Luciano Darderi retired five games into the second set. Martinez was leading 6-3, 4-1, when Darderi threw in the towel. The 27-year-old Martinez reached the third round in the 2021 edition of the Australian Open for his best result at the venue.

Preview

Zverev and Martinez have played once before on the tour. The face-off took place at the Hamburg Open, where the German posted a straightforward 6-2, 6-4 win. The World No. #2 went on to claim the trophy at the ATP 500 event.

For Martinez, it was one of his 23 losses in the 2024 season, even as he finished the year with figures of 18-23. The Spaniard’s lone title came in 2022 in Santiago, and going up against the 23-time titlist will be no easy task.

As the No. #2 seed, Zverev has the benefit of a relatively easy draw, and his first real challenge could be in the last four, where he is seeded to meet Novak Djokovic.

Match prediction

Zverev is a two-time semi-finalist in Melbourne, having made the last four in 2020 and 2024. As such, he is not a stranger to the spotlight and should have little difficulty finding a way past Pedro Martinez.

While Zverev was unable to keep a tab on his unforced errors (29), his ever-reliable serve yielded 18 aces in his opening round. However, the German will look to focus on his breakpoint conversion as he converted only 3 of 18 chances against Pouille.

Martinez was in control of his match against Darderi until the Italian retired. The Spaniard is likely to take a set off Zverev, but the German will most likely prevail in the end.

Result: Zverev will win in four sets.
