Coco Gauff and Leylah Fernandez line-up for their second meeting of the 2025 season.

Third seed Coco Gauff navigated unanticipated resistance from Briton Jodi Burrage in the second round of the Australian Open 2025. The World No. #3 rallied from 5-3 down in the second set against the 173rd-ranked Jodie Burrage. The 6-3, 7-5 victory came in 90 minutes for Gauff against the unseeded Burrage.

The American was made to work harder against her second-round opponent than she did against compatriot Sofia Kenin in the opening round. The result is a third-round rematch against Leylah Fernandez. Gauff met Fernandez for the first time in the recently concluded United Cup, where she overcame the Canadian in straight sets. Courtesy of the win over Burrage, Gauff has 62 wins in women’s singles Grand Slam events.

Fernandez secured a three-set win over Cristina Bucsa with the score reading 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 after spending 2 hours and 40 minutes on court. The Candian fired 30 winners and converted three break points to reach the third round at Melbourne for the first time.

Preview

Gauff has a real chance of becoming the World No. #1 after the conclusion of the Australian Open fortnight. Gauff, the 2024 semi-finalist, is defending 780 points and must win the title to take over the top spot from Aryna Sabalenka in the WTA rankings.

Gauff tasted Grand Slam success when she won the 2023 US Open to become the first American to win in New York since Sloane Stephens in 2017. The 2021 US Open Final remains the best Grand Slam performance by Fernandez.

The two third-round opponents have room for improvement when they face each other on Friday. Fernandez made 40 unforced errors and as many as seven double faults during her win over Bucsa. Gauff followed seven double faults and eighteen unforced errors during her match against Burrage. Making the most of given break point opportunities would work in the American’s favour, too.

Match Prediction

The Australian Open 2025 has seen some of the biggest names of the sport stretched by players outside the top 100. The Gauff-Burrage was another example. However, Gauff overcame the Burrage test to set up a meeting with Leylah Fernandez for the second time this season.

Gauff has her ever-reliable and powerful forehand to fall back on to get her out of a tricky spot. Her serve is another useful tool in her arsenal. This will be the first meeting in a Grand Slam between the pair. The American will be confident of taking the fight to Fernandez after an easy win over the Canadian in the United Cup in early January.

Should Fernandez scale back on her unforced errors while simultaneously focusing on her serve, she could trouble Gauff in their third-round face-off. Given Gauff’s comfort on hard courts, she should have no trouble overcoming Fernandez.

Result: Gauff to win in three sets.
