Jannik Sinner's journey to Australian Open 2025 final

Jannik Sinner could become the second youngest man to defend the Australian Open title.
The defending champion, Jannik Sinner had been in sublime form in build-up to the Australian Open and looks certain to win his third-straight hard court Grand Slam win. After winning the Australian and US Open in 2024, nobody has been able to stop the Italian in his campaign Down-Under.
The 23-year-old did drop a set in a few games, but no match has gone into five sets, highlighting his domination on court. The Italian is on a hot winning streak, having emerged victorious in his last 20 matches. Sinner’s also the youngest player in the Open era to win 20 consecutive Grand Slam matches on hard courts after John McEnroe.
The last time the top seed went through a match without winning a single set was at the ATP Finals in 2023 against Novak Djokovic. Since then, the Italian has been in phenomenal form, dismantling anyone who has crossed his path.
As the current World No. #1, Sinner benefitted from a favourable draw in this year’s Australian Open. Now, he faces a final test against second seeded Alexander Zverev, who is himself searching for a maiden Grand Slam title.
On that note, let’s revisit Jannik Sinner’s journey to the Australian Open 2025 final.
Jannik Sinner’s journey to Australian Open 2025 final
Round one: Nicholas Jarry
Sinner began his campaign slowly, trying to find his feet, as he was playing his first marquee competition after the ATP Finals which he won. The Italian battled hard in the first two sets, with both heading into tiebreaks. But the top seed got the better of Jarry on both counts, and demolished his opponent in the final set 6-1, to grab his first win of the 2025 calendar year, in straight sets.

Round two: Tristan Schoolkate
Local hope Tristan Schoolkate came out all guns blazing against the top seed, managing to take the opening set from the Italian. However, Sinner quickly regained his composure, firing 13 aces and winning three consecutive sets to seal the match in four. This victory showcased Sinner’s calmness and confidence, even when under pressure.
Round three: Marcos Giron
Sinner played his best tennis of the tournament in the third round against Marcos Giron, dominating the clash and winning it in straight sets. The Italian faced no trouble whatsoever in this contest, breaking his opponent on five instances along with a 79% success rate on first serve.
Round four: Holger Rune
The World number one faced his toughest challenge of the competition against Holger Rune in the round of 16, under scorching heat. The Italian entered the court with a sickness and had to take a medical timeout early in the contest. He was visibly seen ‘gasping for breath and trembling’ during the second set which Rune ended up winning.
Fortunately for the 23-year-old, a lenghty break in play due to the breaking of a net camera helped Sinner regain his momentum and catch his breath. Post the break, the defending champion managed to cruise past the Dane and emerge victorious in four sets, thereby advancing to yet another Grand Slam semi-finals.
Quarter-final: Alex de Minaur
Jannik Sinner took on his first top-10 challenge against crowd favourite and local hope Alex de Minaur in the quarter-final match. The Italian though hammered serves consistently, with a staggering 85% success rate on first serve and 80% success rate on second serve. In a brutally one-sided affair, the defending champion silenced the crowd and downed the eighth seed comprehensively 6-3 6-2 6-1.
Semi-final: Ben Shelton
Ben Shelton, playing his maiden Australian Open semi-final faced a stern challenge against the defending champion. However, the American began brilliantly, breaking the Italian early in the first set. Shelton even had two set points for the taking during the tie-break but failed to convert them. The top seed, however, was able to capitalize on the opportunities that came his way.
Similar course followed in the second set, with Shelton unable to convert his chances and Sinner claiming the crunch moments which proved pivotal. In the end, it was a stroll for the Italian in the third set to wrap up the battle comfortably in straight sets.

Final: Alexander Zverev (TBP)
Jannik Sinner is looking to defend his title and become the second youngest to accomplish this milestone at the Melbourne Park but must overcome Alexander Zverev in the finale, against whom the 23-year-old has an unfavourable head-to-head.
The German heads into this contest after winning the first and only set against an injured Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. An enthralling battle between two highly talented youngsters is on the cards in the finale of the men’s singles final of the Australian Open.
