Australian Open 2025 champion Madison Keys became the new number #7 in WTA rankings.
The Australian Open 2025 produces one of the most staggering results in the history of women’s singles. After three weeks of high quality and intense tennis, the competition witnessed a new Grand Slam champion, against the odds.
Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff were the frontrunners to lift the elusive trophy, but it was Madison Keys who produced one of the greatest title runs in recent years to lift her maiden Grand Slam major. With her latest triumph, the American broke into the top 10 rankings, with a huge leap from 19th position, to now become the new World Number #7.
Elena Rybakina, who was the finalist in 2023, lost in the second round of the Australian Open 2024. She began well this season, but suffered a back injury in her third round, which hindered her movement on court. The Kazakh fell to eventual winner, Keys in the round of 16. Despite the defeat, Rybakina is now back into the top five of the WTA rankings.

The top seeds including Sabalenka, Swiatek and Gauff, all retain their ranks. A race to the number one position was getting heated between the Polish and the Belarusian, but Swiatek’s agonising defeat meant Sabalenka continues as the world number one despite losing the final.
Jasmine Paolini continues to stay at number four after an early exit at the hands of Elina Svitolina, while Jessica Pegula finishes the Slam at #6. Semi-finalist Paula Badosa, who eliminated Coco Gauff, is back into the top-10 rankings after a career-best Grand Slam outing while Emma Navarro slips to ninth position. Danielle Collins’ early exit meant she no longer finds a place in the top 10.
However, the most affected player was 2024’s runner-up Qinwen Zheng. The Chinese was stunned by Laura Siegemund in the second round, in straight sets. Due to this defeat, the Paris Olympic gold medalist fell from #5 to number 8.
Players are constantly under pressure to perform, with points and rankings on the line. Success in previous seasons often means defending a significant number of points, and a poor run can lead to a steep drop in rankings, as seen with Zheng in this year’s Australian Open.
The Australian Open 2025 will be remembered for Madison Keys’ incredible championship run, which included victories over WTA’s biggest names— Sabalenka, Swiatek, Svitolina, Rybakina and Collins.
