Wimbledon's unusual record extends with Barbora Krejcikova's exit

Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova was knocked out in the third round by Emma Navarro.
World No. 10 Emma Navarro came back from a set down to deliver the knockout punch against reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova. The Czech visibly struggled with an injury on court after the opening set and was not able to serve in the final set. Despite her physical struggles, she continued to fight hard till the very end.
The American was very impressive, but will hope to serve a lot better in the upcoming rounds. Having qualified for the quarter-final last year, Navarro has shown her ability to adapt to the surface and conditions quickly, and has already beaten two former Wimbledon winners in her 2025 campaign so far.
Krejickova was the only former winner remaining from the pool of WTA players who are alive in the Championship. With the Czech’s elimination, a new champion will be crowned at Wimbledon 2025 for the eighth consecutive season.
Earlier in the day, 2022 champion Elena Rybakina lost in straight sets to Clara Tauson, marking another major upset at the marquee event. 2023 winner Marketa Vondrousova was beaten by local hope Emma Raducanu in the second round.
However, the Brit’s attempt to cause another upset against World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka failed, as the Belarusian held her composure under pressure to prevail in a late-night encounter in straight sets.
Among the players who’ve reached the round of 16, top seed Aryna Sabalenka stands out as the top contender. However, the unpredictable results at this year’s All England Club have shown that no seed is truly safe. Besides Sabalenka, only Mirra Andreeva, Iga Swiatek, and Emma Navarro remain from the WTA top 10 still in the hunt for the title.
Amongst the remaining players, none have ever reached the Wimbledon final before. History is set to be scripted in the WTA draw this year, with only ten seeded players still alive in the tournament. Recent editions have seen unexpected champions emerge, and similar surprises could unfold again when a new name lifts the trophy on July 13.
