Shelton and Fokina to clash for the second time in 2025.

Ben Shelton eased into his second consecutive Washington Open semi-final with a win over DC native Frances Tiafoe in straight sets. Shelton defeated Tiafoe in an all-American semi-final, winning 7-6(2), 6-4 on Friday in just under two hours.

Shelton had some anxious moments in the opening set when he lost serve at 5-5, but broke back to force a tie-break, which he comfortably closed out 7-2 to take the first set. Shelton recorded the fastest serve of the match at 144 mph (231 kmh) in the opening set.

The left-handed Shelton won the final game in the decider on love to end the sixth-seeded Tiafoe’s hopes of advancing. Having avenged his five-set loss to Tiafoe at the 2024 US Open, Shelton moves to 3-1 in their head-to-head. Shelton converting, earning a crucial break of serve in the ten-minute-long seventh game of the second set, was a vital factor in his win.

Shelton, who is three wins short of 100 tour-level career victories, now faces twelfth seed Alejandro Davidovich in the semis. Fokina bundled out top seed Taylor Fritz in a late-night quarter-final.

The Spaniard came back from 2-5 down against Fritz in the final set to win the next five games and prevail 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-5.

The 26-year-old Fokina broke Fritz at 5-3 in the decider and once again, when leading 6-5, to cross the finish line in three hours and four minutes. The Fokina–Fritz encounter is the longest match of the ATP 500 event thus far.

Preview

Ben Shelton’s straight win over Frances Tiafoe means the latter will have to wait another year for a chance to win a title in his backyard. The 22-year-old Atlanta native is looking to make his second final of the season when he takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Saturday’s semi-final.

Shelton is the last American standing after Fokina eliminated Taylor Fritz in three hard-fought sets. The Spaniard had lost two straight matches to Fritz before their latest meeting – in the semi-finals at Eastbourne and the third round at Wimbledon.

Ben Shelton is now at a career-high ranking of World No. 7 in the live ATP Rankings after his win over Tiafoe. He remains in eighth place in the Race to Turin with Alex de Minaur close on his heels.

De Minaur will play the other scheduled semi-final against lucky loser Corentin Moutet. The Frenchman rallied from a set down to beat Daniil Medvedev 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. 7th seed de Minaur further diminished the American presence on his home turf by beating Brandon Nakashima.

Match Prediction

Ben Shelton heads into his semi-final match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina as the top remaining seed in Washington. Fokina leads Shelton 2-0 in their head-to-head. However, the prolonged late-night face-off against Fritz will be a factor in Saturday’s semi-final.

While the 2-0 lead is indeed good news for the 26th-ranked Spaniard, both matches went the distance and lasted three sets. Both their meetings took place at ATP 1000 events – in Paris (2023) and more recently in Monte Carlo (2025).

Shelton has been barely troubled and has yet to drop a set in the ongoing hard-court event. The American will be well-rested and better positioned against Fokina. The World No. 8 will have his sights on emulating compatriot Sebastian Korda, who won the title in 2024.

Result: Shelton will win in three sets.
