Last editionâs runner-up, Carlos Alcaraz, lost 590 points in the 2024 Cincinnati Open.
A video of former ATP World No. #1 Carlos Alcaraz smashing his racquet four times on the ground has gone viral on social media. The incident occurred when Alcaraz was playing Franceâs Gael Monfils in the second round of the 2024 Cincinnati Open.
The Spaniard won the first set. However, the match was later halted in the second set due to rain. When the play resumed on Friday, Monfils won the second set on the tiebreaker and forced the match into a decider. In the deciding set, Alcaraz lost his cool and started smashing his racquet continuously on the ground.
Alcaraz was agitated as he was failing to convert the break points against the 37-year-old Frenchman. Here is the video:
After the match, the 21-year-old stated that he couldnât find anything positive from the loss. Alcaraz also insisted that he wanted to erase the match from his memory. The Spaniard will be traveling to Flushing Meadows soon, where he will start his preparations for the last Grand Slam of the year.
He said (via ATP Tour in the post-match press conference), âItâs kind of really difficult to find some good stuff from this match. So I want to forget it and try to move on to New York. Iâll go to New York and Iâll try to practise well, to get used to those courts. And I will forget this match, because I think it is impossible to get any good things about this match.â
Alcaraz also dubbed his second-round match against Gael Monfils as the worst game of his career. In addition to that, the 21-year-old revealed that he has been feeling well in Cincinnati. He also played well in the first set, which he won 6-4. However, he stated that he wasnât able to control himself during the match, eventually smashing his racquet on the ground four times.
Alcaraz added, âI felt like it was the worst match that I ever played in my career. [I] couldnât play. Honestly, Iâve been practising really well here in this tournament. The previous days, I was feeling great, hitting the ball clear, moving well. I donât know what happened. I donât know how I felt like this, but I couldnât control myself. I couldnât be better. So this match, it was impossible to win.â
Nevertheless, the Spaniard has won two majors, an ATP Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells, and a silver medal at the Paris Olympics this year. He also became the youngest male tennis player to complete a Surface Slam and the third youngest to defend the Wimbledon title. Heâs also one of the only six players in history to complete a Channel Slam.
