Earlier this year, Jannik Sinner withdrew from the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open due to a hip injury.
Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner looked injured as he lost to Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Canadian Open. The ATP World No. #1 was playing in the tournament as the defending champion. Additionally, in the absence of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, he had a great chance to defend the title.
However, Sinner’s run in Montreal was halted by 10-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist Andrey Rublev. Rain interrupted the play in Montreal, and Rublev, who was recently suffering from tonsillitis, recorded a resounding 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Sinner.
Nevertheless, throughout the match, the Australian Open champion was suffering from a fitness issue in his right hip. During the breaks and changeovers, Jannik Sinner was seen massaging his hip. His coach, Darren Cahill also asked the Italian tennis star to call the physio onto the court after the second set.
Sinner started this year with a breakthrough campaign in Melbourne. He defeated the likes of Andrey Rublev, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev to win his first Grand Slam title. He continued his brilliant form by winning the ATP Rotterdam and Miami Open.

However, his hip injury flared at the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters, leading to his withdrawal from the Madrid Open. Due to the aforementioned injury, he also had to miss the Italian Open. It was revealed that his team was aiming to avoid any possibility of the injury becoming chronic. At the French Open, he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal in a five-set marathon.
He later won the Halle Open but failed to replicate the success at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Sinner lost to Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals of the grass-court Major. Unfortunately, it seems like the injury has flared again, just a couple of weeks before the US Open.
Sinner was also playing doubles alongside Jack Draper in Montreal. The duo defeated Belgium’s Sander Gille and Joran Vilegan in the first round for their first doubles victory. In the second round, they stunned Ben Shelton and Alexander Zverev to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. However, the duo has withdrawn from the doubles event too.
Jannik Sinner has been seeded first for the 2024 Cincinnati Masters, where he will have a decent opportunity to get in shape ahead of the US Open if he remains fit. As of now, no statement has been made official by the ATP World No. 1.
