India are yet to defeat Sweden in a Davis Cup encounter.

Tennis’ marquee event, the Davis Cup has entered into its 112th edition in 2024. The tournament will run from February 2-November 25 this year, as 16 different countries jostle for a title in the finals. Defending champions Italy will seek to retain the title as the group stage gets underway in September across four global venues, ahead of the knockout rounds in Malaga, Spain.

The Davis Cup Finals will be held across various countries, while the World Group I ties will take place in tandem with an eye on the next Davis Cup cycle. India will take on Sweden in a mouth-watering World Group I encounter at the Royal Tennis Hall in Stockholm on September 14-15, 2024. For the record, this tie will be India’s sixth attempt to win for the first time against the Scandinavian powerhouse in Davis Cup history.

Like any other Davis Cup tie this also carries weight, with the victor advancing to next year’s qualifiers and the defeated team being relegated to the World Group I playoffs. India are missing key players such as Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri, but still would be optimistic about their chances against a Swedish lineup that lacks its former intimidating roster.

Ramkumar Ramanathan will go into this tie with a psychological advantage, having beaten Sweden’s top-ranked player Elias Ymer. Meanwhile, captain Rohit Rajpal is being cautious in naming a second singles player for the tie, with both Niki Poonacha and N Sriram Balaji available.

Sweden, still reeling from a recent loss to Brazil in the qualifiers, will pin their hopes on World No. 238 Elias Ymer and Leo Borg. The medium-speed indoor court at the Royal Tennis Hall could play to the hosts’ strengths.
