Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale advanced to the women’s doubles semi-finals of the Chennai Open 2026 after defeating Jodie Burrage and Robin Montgomery 7-5, 6-4 at the SDAT Tennis Stadium here on Friday.
The Indian combination served consistently well and returned effectively to get past their opponents in straight sets.
For Bhosale, it is a second consecutive appearance in the doubles semi-finals at the Chennai Open, while Adkar has reached the last four of a WTA 250 doubles event for the first time.
Their victory kept India’s challenge alive in the tournament, while 22-year-old Montgomery enjoyed contrasting fortunes on the day, having earlier defeated Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi 6-3, 6-3 in the singles quarter-finals.

The 17-year-old Maaya had made history by becoming the first Indian since Sania Mirza in 2012 to reach the quarter-finals of a WTA Tour-level singles event. However, she came up against a determined Montgomery, who used her left-handed game, strong serve and powerful groundstrokes to take control of the contest.
The American, who reached the women’s doubles final at the 2026 US Open alongside Ashlyn Krueger, broke Maaya’s serve twice to take the opening set 6-3.
Maaya showed glimpses of her potential in the second set, particularly in the eighth game, where she produced a backhand down-the-line winner, a volley winner, an ace and a forehand winner to keep herself in contention. She also fought back from 1-4 to 3-4, breaking Montgomery before holding her serve.
However, the World no. 151 maintained her advantage and held serve to move 5-3 ahead. Serving to stay in the match, Maaya produced an excellent backhand followed by a forehand winner to bring the game to 30-30.
A backhand error then handed Montgomery match point, which she converted with a backhand cross-court winner to seal the contest in one hour and 12 minutes.
Montgomery has now reached her third tour-level singles semi-final, following her appearances at Auckland in 2025 and ‘S-Hertogenbosch in 2026. She also becomes the first American woman to reach the semi-finals of the Chennai Open.
Speaking after the match, Montgomery praised Maaya’s performance and encouraged the youngster to keep building on her progress.
“I told her at the net to keep going. Playing in front of the home crowd, she handled it really well. She has a bright future ahead of her,” said Montgomery.
In another high-quality singles quarter-final, Japan’s Mai Hontama and Poland’s Magda Linette produced an absorbing contest, with both players displaying strong serving, well-timed strokes and excellent court craft.
Hontama’s compact backswing and deceptively simple shot-making troubled third seeded Linette throughout the match. However, the Pole drew on her reserves of determination and energy to edge past her Japanese opponent.
Montgomery will next face top seed and defending champion Janice Tjen of Indonesia, who defeated sixth seed Polina Kudermetova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The semi-final will be the first meeting between Montgomery and Tjen.
