French Open 2022: Iga Swiatek clinches the Women's Singles title

The 21-year-old wins her second title at the Stade Roland Garros.

The French Open 2022 is coming to an end after a couple of weeks of brilliant tennis on display. In Women’s Singles, World No.1 and top seed Iga Swiatek made short work of American Coco Gauff in a one-sided final at the Court Philippe Chatrier. The straight-sets victory of 6-1, 6-3 saw the Polish star win the second French Open title of her career. 

Several players gave the spectators a lot of entertainment as the tournament winded down at Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France. But hardly anyone was as dominant as Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros.

The 18-year-old prodigy Coco Gauff was unable to topple the 21-year-old top seed from Poland with Robert Lewandowski also in attendance. It just took over an hour for Iga Swiatek to clinch the French Open 2022 title. Her form and confidence levels were too big for the American teenager who was playing her first-ever Grand Slam final.

To get an idea of the form that Swiatek finds herself in, she is currently on a 35-game winning streak. This matches her with Venus Williams for the most consecutive victories this century. “I think honestly, it may seem pretty weird, but having that 35th win and kind of doing something more than Serena did, it’s something special,” said the 21-year-old. “Because I always wanted to... have some kind of a record. In tennis, it’s pretty hard after Serena’s career. So that really hit me, you know. Obviously winning a Grand Slam too, but this one was pretty special because I felt like I’ve done something that nobody has ever done, and maybe it’s gonna be even more,” she continued.

Arevalo and Rojer become champions in Men’s Doubles

Another bracket came to an end as Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer won the title in Men’s Doubles. The duo were too strong for the pairing of Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek and won the French Open 2022 by a 6-7(4-7), 7-6(7-5), 6-3 scoreline. The runners-up were giant killers of the tournament and the unseeded pair came into the final as the underdogs. 

However, the 12th seed pair managed to defeat them thanks to the resilience and brilliant teamwork. The win was sweeter for El Salvador's Marcelo Arevalo who became the first player from Central America to claim a Grand Slam title. He and his teammate from the Netherlands had to save three match points to stay in the match. They turned things around in the final set to clinch the title.
