Coco Gauff vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto match preview

Coco Gauff, who made her French Open debut as a 15-year-old in 2019, has been a regular participant in the prestigious tournament. Her best performance at Roland-Garros came in 2022 when she reached the finals, ultimately losing to Poland’s Iga Swiatek. Gauff also reached the doubles final that year with her partner, Jessica Pegula.

In the current season, Gauff’s most notable achievement was winning the tournament in Auckland, where she defeated Elina Svitolina 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3 in the final. The American began her 2024 French Open campaign with a victory over Julia Avdeeva in the opening round.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto, Gauff’s upcoming opponent, has been making steady progress at the French Open. In 2023, the Italian reached the third round, notably defeating world number 10 Petra Kvitova. This year, Cocciaretto has gone one step further, reaching the fourth round of a major for the first time in her career.

Cocciaretto started the 2024 French Open by battling past 13th seed and 2023 semi-finalist Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets. She then eliminated Cristina Bucsa, dropping just five games, before defeating Liudmila Samsonova to secure her spot in the fourth round.

Prediction

Coco Gauff is the favorite to win the match against Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the Round of 16 at the French Open. Gauff’s higher ranking and consistent performances on clay this year, coupled with her powerful forehand and athleticism, give her a significant advantage.

However, Cocciaretto’s recent form and ability to perform under pressure cannot be overlooked. The Italian has already defeated two seeded players in the tournament, showcasing her fighting spirit and determination.

Gauff’s clay court statistics this year have been more than decent, with a 66.2% win percentage in service games and a 53.2% win percentage in return games. She also ranks sixth in breakpoint win percentage (52.9%) on clay. However, her recent defeat to Iga Swiatek in the semifinals of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia suggests that she may not be at her absolute best.

In comparison, Cocciaretto has a 4-5 match record on clay this year, winning 65.1% of her service games and 31.8% of her return games. She has converted 50.8% of her break-point chances on the surface.

Considering these factors, the prediction leans towards a victory for Gauff, possibly in straight sets. Gauff’s overall consistency on clay and ability to handle crucial points should give her the edge.

Result: Gauff to win in straight sets.
