Jannik Sinner faces Corentin Moutet in the French Open fourth round in a first-ever career head-to-head.

Jannik Sinner remains on track for a potential second Grand Slam title to add to the Australian Open trophy he picked up in January. The second seed moved past Pavel Kotov 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a straight-set win in French Open 2024.

He produced an all-round display to quell Kotov’s challenge and prevail in the two-hour, 27-minute encounter. Sinner broke his opponent’s serve once in each set to clinch the match against the World No. 56 and extend his head-to-head lead to 2-0, including his win against the Russian in last month’s Madrid Open.

Sinner having climbed to 31-2 this season, takes on Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the fourth round in Paris. Moutet has played four-set matches in all the rounds at Roland Garros, spending close to three hours each time he walked out on the court. The French player’s third round against Sebastian Ofner took two hours and 47 minutes and saw Moutet pull off a comeback to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 against the 45th-ranked Austrian.

Jannik Sinner vs Corentin Moutet preview

Jannik Sinner, the reigning Australian Open champion and World No. #2, has a double prize in his sights this fortnight. Should he emerge victorious on June 9, Sinner will secure his second Grand Slam title of the year, along with displacing Novak Djokovic as the new No. #1 in the ATP Rankings. An appearance in the final will be sufficient for him to be crowned the new World No. #1.

Regardless of the result, Sinner will take over the top spot on June 10 if Djokovic exits the French Open before the championship match.

A win against Corentin Moutet will put Sinner on the path to a confrontation with Carlos Alcaraz, the Spaniard against whom he has played four consecutive semifinals, beginning with the Indian Wells ATP 1000 event in 2023. Sinner is seeded to meet Alcaraz in the last four of the French Open.

Prediction

Both of the French Open round of 16 opponents, Jannik Sinner and Corentin Moutet, have won four of their last five matches. Considering their last 10 matches, Moutet has won six, while Sinner has won nine.

Sinner has been on a roll this season and is 3-0 in finals, while his French rival has yet to appear in a final in 2024. Sinner’s clay court record stands at 6-1, compared to 6-7 for Moutet. Should Sinner win the first set, he will be in a better position to defeat Moutet, as the Italian is 25-1 after winning the first set, compared to the French player’s 5-5.

Sinner winning 90% of his service games ought to be a cause for concern for Moutet, who averages 74%. Moutet has faced 106 breakpoints this season, saving 58% of them. Sinner has faced only 33 breakpoints, saving 76% of them.

Sinner has been dominant this season, winning 31 of his 33 matches, while Moutet has 21 wins and 13 losses. It is fair to expect the Italian’s dominant run on the ATP Tour to continue

Result: Jannik Sinner to win in straight sets.
