Djokovic and Musetti prepare for their second face-off in the 2024 season

The third round of the French Open 2024 braces itself for an epic rematch as Lorenzo Musetti faces Novak Djokovic. Three years ago, a then 19-year-old Musetti made a memorable run to the fourth round in his main draw debut, stunning top seed Djokovic by taking a two-set before retiring in the fifth set. The stylish Italian has now secured another shot at the world No. #1 by dismissing Gael Monfils 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 on Thursday night.

Djokovic, the reigning champion, continued his pursuit of a third Roland-Garros title and record 25th Grand Slam crown with a routine 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Roberto Carballes Baena. The Serbian superstar was utterly dominant on Court Philippe-Chatrier, securing his 19th consecutive appearance in the third round at the clay-court major with consummate ease.

Novak Djokovic vs Lorenzo Musetti preview

Djokovic, while waiting for his first title of 2024, has improved to 16-6 overall this season and 8-3 on clay. The Serbian’s last Grand Slam trophy was the 2023 US Open, his 24th major title. Should he win at Roland Garros, it will be his 25th major, edging him ahead of Margaret Court and securing his fourth French Open title.

The upcoming third-round match between Djokovic and Musetti will be their second encounter of the year, following their fourth-round match in Monte Carlo. On that occasion, the Serbian claimed a straight-set victory, defeating the Italian 7-5, 6-3.

Lorenzo Musetti defeated Colombian player Daniel Elahi Galan 6-3, 6-3, 7-5, and scored another straight-set victory against local player Gael Monfils to reach the third round. The Italian’s win against Monfils evened their head-to-head record at 1-1 and denied the Frenchman a 40th main-draw win at Roland Garros.

Musetti’s last meeting with Djokovic at Roland Garros was in 2021, when the 22-year-old Italian retired in the fifth set, trailing 4-0. The World No. 30 Musetti’s fourth-round appearances in 2021 and 2023 remain his best performances on the clay courts of Roland Garros.
