Two-time runner-up Dominic Thiem is playing his last French Open this year.
Roland Garros recently released the complete list of wildcards for the upcoming 2024 French Open, scheduled to take place from May 20 to June 9.
In other words, a wildcard is a player who gets accepted into the main draw at the discretion of the committee because their world ranking is not enough to participate in the championship. However, the French Open wildcards list doesn’t include the names of Dominic Thiem, Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki or Emma Raducanu.
Emma Raducanu, former Wimbledon champion, has been suffering from fitness concerns for a long time. The 21-year-old managed to reach the quarterfinals at the Stuttgart Open last month. However, she was eventually eliminated by Iga Swiatek. Currently ranked 212, the 21-year-old has lost seven out of 16 matches in 2024.
Meanwhile, Simona Halep is expected to return to action after a long time following the doping controversies and fitness issues. Caroline Wozniacki has been out of form in the 2024 season. She’s currently ranked 119 and she has played 14 matches in the ongoing season, losing seven.
However, Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem is set to retire at the end of the ongoing season. The former US Open champion decided to hang his boots at the age of 30 because of the right wrist injury he suffered during the 2021 Mallorca Championships.
Thiem is also a two-time French Open runner-up (2018 and 2019); however, the 30-year-old has failed to earn a wildcard at Roland Garros. He last played at the 2024 Madrid Open, where he was eliminated in the qualifiers.
