Novak Djokovic sets up French Open final with Stefanos Tsitsipas

Barbora Krejcikova progresses to the women's doubles title decider.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic beat defending champion Rafael Nadal in an enthralling encounter to set up the final clash against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the French Open.

It was a sensational match between two tennis legends as Djokovic clinched the victory by a scoreline of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-2 against his long time rival. The semifinal match lasted for more than four hours. This is the second win for the Serbian over Nadal in French Open. He used his technique to good effect to reach his sixth Roland Garros final.

Novak Djokovic will now face World No. 5 Tsitsipas who overcame the challenge of Alexander Zverev to reach the final. The Greek staved off a fightback from his German counterpart to emerge victorious 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3.

Tsitsipas has been the leading player on the ATP Tour this year, winning more clay court matches than anyone else and claiming titles on the surface in Monte Carlo and Lyon. He started well in this match too, easing into a two-set lead without being truly tested. He was dominant from the baseline as a lost-looking Zverev failed to change his tactics and was drawn into errors, which he could not rectify until the third set.

However, the German was not one to back down. He improved his level and tightened up his game to haul himself level. Eventually, the first game of the final set decider proved pivotal. Stefanos Tsitsipas fought off three break points to hold serve, halting Zverev's momentum and going on to earn what was the decisive break in the fourth game. The 22-year-old finally came out on top in a French Open match that lasted for three hours and 37 minutes.

Therefore, Stefanos Tsitsipas created history by becoming the first-ever player from Greece to reach a Grand Slam final.

Passing on the baton?

Elsewhere, soon to be dethroned women's singles champion Iga Swiatek reached the summit clash of the French Open in the women's doubles event. Swiatek and her American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands comfortably beat Irina Camelia-Begu of Romania and Argentina's Nadia Podoroska 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets.

They will face the challenge of Czech duo Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova in the final. The pair also secured a straight sets victory, winning 6-1, 6-2. Interestingly, they overcame a Polish-American duo on Friday and will face another pair from the same nations. Magda Linette of Poland and American Bernarda Pera didn't really provide much of a challenge on Court Simonne Mathieu.

This was Krejcikova's second match in as many days, with the 25-year-old seen in action last night. She triumphed over Greek Maria Sakkari in what was the longest Roland Garros women's singles semi-final in the Open Era. The Czech will again be in action tomorrow in the women's singles final versus Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia.

However, intriguingly enough Iga Swiatek will be one of the opponents of Barbora Krejcikova in the women's doubles final. As such, it could turn out to be a clash of the former champion versus the newly crowned queen.
