The King of Clay featured in 30 Grand Slam finals.
Rafael Nadal, also known as the King of Clay is a 22-time Grand Slam champion only behind Novak Djokovic (who has won 24 times) in men’s singles tennis history. The Spaniard has dominated the Roland Garros having won the French Open 14 times! Nadal and Roger Federer, both reached their peak at the same time and hence fought a series of Grand Slam finals until Djokovic burst into the act, resulting in the formation of the big three.
Nadal’s last Grand Slam major victory came at the 2022 French Open when he beat Casper Ruud. The tennis legend reached the grand slam finals for the first time in 2005 at the same event.
Yet, with an impressive career which includes two Olympic gold medals and countless records, it’s the perfect time to look back at his Grand Slam finals appearances and explore the rivals he has faced most often in those high-stakes battles for silverware.
Five opponents Rafael Nadal has faced the most in Grand Slam finals
5. Stan Wawrinka (2)
Stan Wawrinka was one of the few players outside the big three to consistently challenge Rafael Nadal, facing off against the Spaniard in two Grand Slam finals. In 2017, the Swiss was defeated decisively at the French Open, losing in straight sets. However, one of Wawrinka’s three Grand Slam titles came in a thrilling contest at the 2014 Australian Open, where he edged out Nadal in a tough four-set battle.
4. Daniil Medvedev (2)
The big match performer Daniil Medvedev had fought Rafael Nadal twice in Grand Slam finals but faced failure on both instances. The Russian was outlasted in a classic five-set battle at the 2019 US Open followed by another mouth-watering battle at the 2022 Australian Open wherein the Spaniard came back from two sets down to win his 21st Grand Slam.
Historically, Nadal has dominated Medvedev with an overall head-to-head record of 5-1, further proving his superiority in their matchups.
3. Dominic Thiem (2)
In a career riddled with injuries, Dominic Thiem concluded with just a solitary Grand Slam title, an underwhelming achievement given his immense talent and potential. Thiem’s peak years unfortunately coincided with the dominance of the Big Three.
Known for his strong record on clay, the Austrian delivered outstanding performances in back-to-back French Open finals in 2018 and 2019. However, he faced the formidable “King of Clay” in both, resulting in two consecutive Grand Slam final defeats.

2. Novak Djokovic (9)
Amidst the dominance of Federer and Djokovic emerged a young Serbian who went on to dominate the men’s singles tennis circuit in the following years. Novak Djokovic vs Rafael Nadal has been one of this decade’s greatest sporting rivalries and every time the duo contested the other, tennis fans witnessed incredible battles and rallies. Nadal led their summit clash rivalry with 5 wins in nine meetings.
The 2010 US Open was the first of the eventual nine Grand Slam final clashes between the Serbian and the Spaniard, which Nadal triumphed comfortably. This followed three wins on the trot for Djokovic at the 2011 US Open, Wimbledon and 2012 Australian Open. The 2012 Australian Open final is a close contender for the match of the decade as both players produced their best in a nerve-wrecking five setter where Djokovic won after 5 hours and 53 minutes
Nadal showed his dominance on clay as despite Djokovic’s otherwise supreme record, the Spaniard remained invincible at the Garros staying unbeaten against Djokovic in French Open finals.
1. Roger Federer (9)
2006 to 2009 was the period of unreal dominance shared between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer as the duo dominated the podium on as many as seven such instances, with the Swiss legend winning only two out of those. Two of the greatest and arguably most loved tennis players always gave it their all on court but it was their outstanding off-the-court behaviour, that earned them millions of fans across the globe.
Interestingly the rivalry between the two legends is rather one sided, with the Spaniard leading the head-to-head by a massive margin of 24-16. When it comes to Grand Slam finals, barring the 2006, 2007 Wimbledon championship and 2017 Australian Open, Nadal has got the better of Federer on every occasion.
The 2008 Wimbledon championship title was one of Nadal’s hall mark triumphs as he put an end to Federer’s 5-year streak and defeated him on a court where many believed the Swiss maestro to be invincible.
