Grigor Dimitrov injury update: Will Bulgarian recover ahead of US Open 2025?

Grigor Dimitrov will miss three key events in the build-up to the hard-court major.
Grigor Dimitrov suffered a pectoral injury during his fourth-round match against World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. The Bulgarian player was forced to retire mid-match for the fifth consecutive Grand Slam match, putting a premature end to his Wimbledon 2025 campaign.
To add to the disappointment of the former Wimbledon semi-finalist, he was 2 sets to love up, against the Italian, and one of the greatest upsets in tennis history was in the making.
There were emotional scenes at Centre Court of Wimbledon 2025 when Dimitrov realised he would not be able to play. Everyone in the stands empathized with him, as they had been treated to two hours of magic tennis by the 34-year-old. Dimitrov underwent an MRI scan, which revealed a partial muscle tear of the pectoralis major muscle.
The severity of the injury and how long it will take to recover is yet to be determined, as the 19th seed is currently being treated by one of the best doctors on the island, as revealed by the Bulgarian’s manager, Georgi Stoimenov.
However, such injuries generally take at least 90 days for recovery, and hence, Dimitrov is certain to miss the upcoming tennis tournaments. He was scheduled to compete in Bastad, an ATP 250 event, starting on 14 July.
While he is certain to miss this clay court competition, the Bulgarian will also remain absent from the ATP Masters 1000 events that mark the beginning of the hard-court swing, including the Canada Open (from July 27) and the Cincinnati Open (from August 7).
The good news for Dimitrov is that he did not play in Bastad and Toronto last year, and lost in the opening round of Cincinnati in 2024. Hence, despite his absence, it will cost him very few points, thereby sustaining his place in the top-25 ATP rankings.
The road to recovery for Dimitrov is being designed in such a way that he should be fit and raring to go at the US Open, which is slated to begin in the last week of August. According to initial predictions by doctors, the Bulgarian, with proper rehabilitation, should be able to feature in the final Grand Slam.
Fans around the world eagerly await Grigor Dimitrov’s return to action, as the Bulgarian’s remarkable talent and flair have always thrilled crowds. His career, however, could end as one of tennis’s biggest “what-ifs,” given the many injuries that repeatedly derailed his momentum. Without those setbacks, Dimitrov might have achieved even greater heights in the sport.
