The injury also ended Grigor Dimitrov’s record-run of 58 consecutive Grand Slam appearances.
The tennis world is gearing up for the final Grand Slam of the year as the US Open kicks off on August 24. However, this time a regular name and beloved figure will be missed — Bulgarian tennis star Grigor Dimitrov has been ruled out from the Flushing Meadows for the first time in over a decade.
This marks the end of Dimitrov’s extraordinary streak of 58 consecutive Grand Slam appearances, a run that began at the 2011 Australian Open, where he reached the second round. Since then, he has not missed a single major. This is the longest streak among active players and fifth in overall tennis.
The news was confirmed by his manager, Georgi Stoimenov, to TennisKafe. The reason for Dimitrov’s withdrawal is a partial tear of the pectoralis major muscle, an injury he sustained during Wimbledon 2025. While fans had hoped for a quick recovery, it appears the healing process is taking longer than expected.
At Wimbledon 2025, Dimitrov reached the Round of 16, where he faced world No. 1 and eventual champion Jannik Sinner. The 34-year-old Bulgarian was leading 2-0, when injury forced him to retire at 6–3, 7–5, 2–2.
Dimitrov has had a consistent and respectable career in tennis. He has claimed nine ATP singles titles, but a Grand Slam trophy has eluded him. Dimitrov did came close to winning on occasions, with three semi-finals appearances at Majors.
Dimitrov is also a former ATP Finals champion, having won the biggest title of his career at the prestigious year-end event in 2017. That earned him a career-high ranking of World No. 3, the highest ever achieved by a Bulgarian player in history. His most recent title came in 2024, when he lifted the trophy in Brisbane.
Last year at the US Open, Grigor Dimitrov had a formidable run that included a thrilling five-set victory in the Round of 16 against Russian star Andrey Rublev, winning 6–3, 7–6, 1–6, 3–6, 6–3.
However, the 34-year-old’s campaign came to an unfortunate end in the quarter-finals, where he was forced to retire due to injury during his match against Frances Tiafoe, resulting in a walkover at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
