Since then, the rivalry has grown. In five career meetings, Gauff leads the head-to-head 3-2. Their most recent clash came in Beijing 2024, where Gauff prevailed 3-6, 6-4, Retired, after Osaka was forced to withdraw mid-match.

For Osaka, who is currently ranked 24, this is her first appearance in the US Open fourth round since her 2020 title run. The Japanese superstar showcased her fighting spirit by defeating 15th seed Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 in a tough third-round battle.

Ahead of the upcoming match against Gauff, the Japanese star said in a press conference, “To be at this point of my life and to be playing her again is honestly, for me, feels kind of special.”

“Since I’ve come back I kind of wanted everything to happen really quickly. So I think it took, I keep saying like after Wimbledon, but for me to just completely not even think about results anymore and just try to focus on every match by itself,” Osaka added.
