India defeated the 2024 finalists in the round 1 qualifiers in a thrilling tie.

India made history against Netherlands in the Davis Cup 2026 first round tie. Against all odds, the home team stunned a higher-ranked Dutch side in a closely fought contest. Netherlands decided to field a weakened squad, after their singles stars (Tallon Griekspoor and Botic van de Zandschulp) decided to prioritize the ATP-500 Rotterdam Open.

India took complete advantage, of this. An unlikely hero emerged for the country: Dhakshineswar Suresh, who was ranked outside top-400 at the time, completed a hat-trick of victories.

After India’s No. 1 singles star Sumit Nagal slumped to a defeat in the opening clash, DK Suresh stunned the Dutch team’s highest-ranked player, Jesper de Jong.

He then partnered up with Yuki Bhambri in doubles, to overcome an experienced doubles pair from Netherlands. While Nagal’s loss set up the stage for a do-or-die clash, DK Suresh used his big serves under pressure to good effect, to help India register a memorable win.

India make gains in Davis Cup rankings

Shortly after their heroics, India reaped rewards by climbing up the rankings chart. Prior to the Dutch tie, they were placed No. 33, and have now jumped 14 spots to occupy the 19th place. This is the first time they reached the top-20 since 2019.

Looking to shatter more records, India will be aiming to book their spot in the final eight. In order to do so, they must overcome #16 ranked South Korea in the second round of the Davis Cup 2026 qualifiers.
