Hosts failed to capitalise on chances.

India endured a tough outing on Day 3 of the Billie Jean King Cup 2026 Asia/Oceania Group I, going down 0-3 to Indonesia in a tie that was defined by missed opportunities and a late fixture change.

In an unexpected development, India were initially scheduled to face Mongolia but were informed late on the previous night about a switch to Indonesia due to a technical adjustment.

Captain Vishal Uppal confirmed the change, stating that the team had to quickly regroup and strategise for a different opponent.

The day began with heartbreak for Vaishnavi Adkar, who pushed Priska Madelyn Nugroho to the limit before falling 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 in a gruelling three-set encounter. Adkar had multiple opportunities, including a lead in the opening set and crucial moments in the decider, but couldn’t convert.

Reflecting on the loss, Adkar said, â€śIt was a pretty tough match… I think I put up a good fight, though it didn’t go my way.” She acknowledged lapses at key moments, adding that her opponent was â€śmore solid” when it mattered.

India’s troubles deepened in the second singles rubber, where Sahaja Yamalapalli was outplayed by Janice Tjen in a 2-6, 1-6 defeat. The Indonesian dictated play throughout, exposing inconsistencies and leaving little room for a comeback.

The doubles match offered a brief spark, with Rutuja Bhosale and Ankita Raina showing resilience against Aldila Sutjiadi and Tjen.

After losing the first set 3-6, the Indian pair fought back strongly in the second and pushed it to a tiebreak. Despite holding multiple set points, they were unable to close it out, sealing the tie for Indonesia.

Summing up the day, Uppal said, â€śToday was a day of missed chances.” He pointed to key turning points, especially in the opening singles and the second set of the doubles, where India failed to capitalise on crucial opportunities.

He also underlined the learning curve for the team, particularly against higher-ranked opponents. â€śAgainst top players, you can’t play two good points and then have three or four errors. That really hurts you,” he noted.

Despite the defeat, the focus remains on growth and resilience. â€śWe take the hit, learn from it and move on. Our job is to fight,” Uppal added, as India look to bounce back in the remaining ties.
