Billie Jean King Cup 2026: India edge South Korea to retain spot in Asia/Oceania Group I

Thailand and Indonesia qualified the playoffs.
India closed their Billie Jean King Cup 2026 Asia/Oceania Group I campaign on a high, defeating South Korea 2–1 in a tightly contested tie.
Despite missing out on qualification, the victory ensured India finished third, capping off a week that captain Vishal Uppal summed up as one of “missed chances, but a lot more hope than disappointment.”
India’s tie against Korea followed a familiar script by following resilience in singles and authority in doubles. Ankita Raina fought hard but went down to Baek Dayeon 1–6, 7–5, 3–6 despite creating early opportunities. Vaishnavi Adkar then stepped up under pressure, edging Park Sohyun 7–6, 7–6 in a nervy contest to level the tie.
In the decider, the experienced duo of Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale dominated, defeating Baek Dayeon and Lee Eunhye 6–2, 6–2 to seal the win.
India’s strategy was clear by pushing the tie into doubles, where they held the edge. “We always felt if we got to doubles, we had the advantage,” Uppal said, a call that proved decisive with a commanding performance in the final match.
For Raina, the occasion of representing India outweighed individual results. “It’s always a privilege to step on court for India… you just want to give your best for the team,” she said after the match.
“Adkar, one of the standout performers, highlighted her growth through the week, particularly in handling pressure during tight moments.”
Uppal, however, reflected on the broader campaign with a sense of what could have been. Early losses, especially against Thailand proved costly. “Two to three hours of bad tennis at the start of the week changed the whole story,” he admitted.
With the Asian Games approaching, the team now turns its focus to preparation and consistency. Raina and Bhosale indicated their intent to continue as a doubles pairing, while younger players like Adkar are expected to benefit from the experience of team competition and high-pressure matches.
