India suffered a 2–1 defeat to Thailand in their Billie Jean King Cup 2026 Asia/Oceania Group I tie at the DLTA complex, with the visitors clinching both singles rubbers before India responded in doubles.
Thailand took an early lead in the tie through Anchisa Chanta, who defeated Vaishnavi Adkar in straight sets, 6–1, 6–3. Chanta delivered a dominant performance, controlling proceedings from the baseline and allowing Adkar little room to settle into the match.
The second singles rubber between Sahaja Yamalapalli and Patcharin Cheapchandej proved to be a more closely contested affair. The match, which began on April 7, was interrupted by rain and suspended with Cheapchandej leading 6–4, 1–6, 4–3 in the third set.
When play concluded, the Thai player managed to maintain her advantage and seal the match, giving Thailand an unassailable 2–0 lead in the tie.
With the result decided, India produced a strong response in the doubles rubber. The experienced pair of Rutuja Bhosale and Ankita Raina defeated Thasaporn Naklo and Peangtarn Plipuech 6–3, 6–4 to register a consolation win for the hosts.
Speaking after the tie, India’s captain Vishal Uppal acknowledged the gap in performance levels.
“Not the result we wanted. We knew Thailand is a very good team and we had to play some really good tennis. Unfortunately, we didn’t do what we needed to do,” Uppal said.
He also played down external factors such as officiating and conditions, emphasizing the need for greater resilience within the squad. “We need to come out with a lot more self-belief and a lot more heart if we want to beat these good teams,” he added.
Despite the loss, India will take confidence from their doubles performance as they prepare for their next tie in the competition, with every match proving crucial in the group standings.
