On Sunday, the Italian Open 2024 men’s singles final will crown a new champion, as Germany’s Alexander Zverev and Chile’s Nicolas Jarry vie for the title in Rome.

The 26-year-old German advanced to the championship match by rallying from a set down to beat Chilean Alejandro Tabilo 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the semi-finals.
On the other hand, Nicholas Jarry flourished against the American Tommy Paul in a three-set semi-final clash and booked his first Masters 1000 final spot. Jarry knocked out Matteo Arnaldi, Stefano Napolitano, Alexandre Muller and Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the final four.

Alexander Zverev vs Nicolas Jarry Preview
Alexander Zverev advanced to the final of the Rome Masters after defeating Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the semi-finals. Tabilo overwhelmed the third seed in the first set with powerful forehands and deceptive drop shots. Zverev fought back to capture the second set tiebreak before running away with the third set, securing victory in 2 hours and 17 minutes.
Zverev is aiming for his 11th Masters title and second Rome crown, having previously won in 2017 and finished as a runner-up to Rafael Nadal in 2018.
On the other hand, Nicolas Jarry outlasted Tommy Paul of the USA 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 after 2 hours and 44 minutes. Jarry saved four match points, struck 13 aces and 33 winners to offset 49 unforced errors.
Sunday’s final will be Jarry’s seventh career ATP final, all coming on clay courts. The Chilean has a 50% record in tour-level championship matches, with three titles and three runner-up finishes. His previous titles came in three weeks in 2019 at tournaments in Chile, Geneva and Sweden.

Prediction
Alexander Zverev enters Sunday’s Italian Open final against Nicolas Jarry as the slight favorite, holding a 4-2 head-to-head advantage. The German has won their last two meetings, though Jarry did prevail in straight sets the last time they met on clay in Geneva last year.
Recent form gives Zverev the edge, having won a higher percentage of second serve points (55.51% to 52.39%) and return games (49.87% to 48.55%) over the last six months. His ability to save 70.25% of break points faced compared to 64.74% for Jarry could prove crucial on the clutch points.
No 16 seed has also maintained a superior 75.56% match winning percentage this year against Jarry’s 64.06% mark. Zverev has faced stiffer competition too, playing opponents with an average rank of 91.54 compared to 126.44 for the Chilean.
While the streaky Jarry’s high unforced error count is a concern, Zverev’s big match experience and clutch play gives him an advantage. The Olympic gold medalist has won 76% of deciding sets over the last 12 months, compared to 60% for Jarry. Zverev also has a 2-1 edge in tiebreaks in their head-to-head.
Zverev’s all-around superior numbers and 4-2 head-to-head edge make him the favorite heading into the championship match. However, Jarry’s power game and recent clay success mean an upset is certainly possible
Result: Zverev to win in three sets
