Quite surprisingly, two-time Grand Slam winner Aryna Sabalenka is yet to defeat her Ukrainian opponent.

Aryna Sabalenka had to battle American qualifier Katie Volynets from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the Italian Open 2024. Sabalenka hit 34 winners and 24 unforced errors during her 2-hour and 15-minute comeback.

Sabalenka was forced to reign in her naturally powerful gameplay after Volynets played a measured first set to take a one-nil lead.

A year ago, Sabalenka won the Madrid Open in a three-setter against Iga Swiatek but went on to lose to Sofia Kenin in the second round. This year, she lost in a rematch to Swiatek in another three-set face-off and squandered three match points in the final against the Pole.

World No. #33 Dayana Yastremska took a win against Laura Siegemund 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 on Friday. She will be Aryna Sabalenka’s third-round opponent in the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. In her match against Siegmund, the Ukrainian took charge of affairs from the second set, converting 4/6 breakpoints in the second and 3/4 breakpoints in the third.

The third round of the 2024 Internazionali BNL d’Italia match between Aryna Sabalenka and Dayana Yastremska will be available for Indian viewers on WTA TV and Tennis TV.

Prediction

Aryna Sabalenka will be hoping to break her jinx of three straight losses against Dayana Yastremska. The World No. #2 has never defeated Yastremska on the WTA Tour.

Sabalenka was stretched by 22-year-old and World No. #9 Katie Volynets in the second round despite being well rested. The Volynets match was her opening round, having received a first-round bye.

The Belarusian does have an edge when it comes to clay court wins in the 2024 season over her Ukrainian colleague. Sabalenka has seven wins for two losses, while Yastremska has two wins with two losses.

Both players will be mindful that they are a little too generous with the double faults – 87 from 26 matches for Sabalenka and 65 from 18 for Yastremska. The duo are powerful servers, with Sabalenka accounting for 137 and Yastremska 49 this season.

They are equally good when it comes to converting breakpoints. Sabalenka has converted 46.2%, while Yastremska has converted 45%. When it comes to saving breakpoints, Sabalenka takes the lead with 58.5 % to 50.4% by Yastremska.

The tally of service games won is also in Sabalenka’s favour at 78.7% to 62% by Yastremska. Coming to return games won, Yastremska is on 35% to Sabalenka’s 36.5%.

The most vital statistic in Yastremska’s favour is perhaps her clean slate against Sabalanka, which stands at 3-0 – and the Ukrainian will be determined to keep it that way when they meet on Sunday.

Result: Dayana Yastremska to win in three sets.
