This will be the third meeting between both players.
Iga Świątek advanced past Yulia Putintseva with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the Italian Open 2024. Świątek mounted a comeback from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to secure her fourth straight-set win over the Kazakhstan player.
The two-time Rome champion has now extended her winning streak to eight matches following the 1-hour and 46-minute contest. Świątek’s triumph over Putintseva brings her a step closer to becoming only the third player to clinch both the Rome and Madrid titles in the same year.
Only Dinara Safina in 2009 and Serena Williams in 2013 have managed to pull off the rare double of winning Madrid and Rome in the same year.
Former World No.1 Angelique Kerber will await the current World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the fourth round. The German defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3, 7-6 (4). Kerber has reached the last 16 of a WTA 1000 event for the second time since returning from maternity leave in January. She reached the last 16 at Indian Wells too.

Iga Swiatek vs Angelique Kerber – Preview
The 36-year-old Kerber has found her groove at the ongoing Internazionali BNL d’Italia. She has pulled off straight-set wins over Lauren Davis, 17th seed Veronika Kudermetova and Aliaksandra Sasnovich en route to the fourth round. In the first two matches, Kerber who has three Grand Slam titles, dropped only four games.
Swiatek who had a bye in the first round had an easy outing in the second round against 77th-ranked American Bernarda Pera with a straight-set win. However, the Polish World No. 1 was tested on court by Yulia Putintseva during her straight-set win. Putintseva troubled Swiatek with her drop shots, forcing the latter onto the back foot early in the second set. The Kazakh came into Rome with back-to-back WTA 1000 quarter-final appearances in Miami and Madrid this year.

The Polish star secured two trophies in Rome in 2021 and 2022. Świątek has accumulated four wins in her last five matches, including one bye. Kerber has achieved three wins in her previous five matches, all secured in straight sets. Świątek, however, was pushed to her limits in the Madrid Open final against Aryna Sabalenka, clinching a three-set victory.
The Pole overcame three match points to triumph in the third-set tiebreak with a score of 9-7, earning her a maiden Madrid Open trophy and her 20th career title.
