Bopanna and Ebden began their Italian Open campaign with a convincing win.
After an early exit from the ATP Masters events in Monte-Carlo and Madrid, the doubles team of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden started their campaign Italian Open 2024 with a straight-set victory over the Italian pair Matteo Arnaldi and Francesco Passaro.
Bopanna and Ebden, who lost in the first round of their two previous tournaments, had a disappointing month as the former World No. 1 doubles team. However, the Indo-Australian duo defeated Arnaldi and Passaro with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win in just 52 minutes.
The pair converted four out of six break-point chances while preventing their opponents from capitalizing on any of the three break-point opportunities they had.
In the second round, the 2024 Miami Open champions will compete against another Italian duo, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. Bolelli and Vavassori advanced after defeating Christopher Eubanks and John Peers in their opening 82-minute match with a score of 7-6(4), 6-3.

Rohanna Bopanna and Matthew Ebden are in pole position in the doubles race to Turin, while their second-round rivals in the Italian Open are in second place. While Bopanna and Ebden had to contend with earlier-than-expected exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid, Bolellli and Vavassori reached the quarterfinals at both events.
Bopanna and Ebden, as a doubles pair, reached the round of 16 last season in Rome. Bopanna reached the finals in 2013 with fellow Indian Mahesh Bhupathi but lost to the Bryan brothers – Bob and Mike in straight sets. Ebden, in partnership with fellow Aussie Max Purcell, reached the round of 16 in the 2022 edition.
The winner of the second round will go on to play Nikola Mektic And Wesley Koolhof in the third round. Mektic and Koolhof won the Indian Wells Masters earlier this year. Mektic won the Rome Masters with Mate Pavic in 2022, while Koolhof was a semifinalist in the Italian Capital in 2023 while paired with Neal Skupski.
