Swiatek went down to Danielle Collins in straight sets.

Iga Swiatek, who was the World No #1 until November 2024, and has been inside the top-3 WTA rankings since 2022, has now suffered a massive blow, after her round of 32 loss to Danielle Collins in Italian Open 2025. The Pole was the reigning champion, and had to defend 1000 points, but this early exit meant Swiatek lost more than 900 points.

Swiatek last won a title at the French Open 2024, and despite several quarter-final and semi-final appearances, she has not reached the final since her triumph in Paris. The once dominating player on clay now seems to be struggling on her favorite court too.

Iga Swiatek managed to win only a single game in the first set against the American. Despite gaining an early break in the second, the 26-year-old couldn’t hold onto the advantage and eventually lost in straight sets. A dismal 2 out of 10 break point conversion is uncharacteristic of the Swiatek who has dominated clay courts in recent years.

The five-time Grand Slam champion, earlier failed to defend her title in Madrid too. She now enters Roland Garros under tremendous pressure, as another failure could result in a heavier decline. On the contrary, Aryna Sabalenka, the current World No #1 continues her rise at the top. Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will fight it out for the World No #2 position, as the American pair are separated by only 25 points at present.

Updated WTA rankings after Swiatek’s third-round defeat in Rome

  • Aryna Sabalenka – 10533
  • Coco Gauff – 6268
  • Jessica Pegula – 6243
  • Iga Swiatek- 5838
  • Jasmine Paolini – 4930
  • Mirra Andreeva – 4835
  • Madison Keys – 4620
  • Qinwen Zheng – 4043
  • Emma Navarro – 3721
  • Paula Badosa – 3641
