Jasmine Paolini created history, becoming only the third local hope to win the Italian Open.

After a long wait of 40 years, a local favourite was crowned champion in Rome as Jasmine Paolini defeated Coco Gauff in straight sets to become the new Italian Open winner. Gauff, meanwhile, was handed her second consecutive final defeat, as Paolini completed a sensational run, marked by grit, determination and turnarounds.

The Rome event, a WTA-1000 event also served as one final opportunity for players to hit their straps ahead of the French Open 2025. Several players found much needed form, including finalists Paolini and Gauff, alongside semi-finalist Qinwen Zheng who beat top seed Aryna Sabalenka and fell short against Gauff in a closely fought three setter.

The story of the tournamet though was Paolini’s triumph in the presence of her family and fellow countrymen. “It’s pure joy to have this trophy in my hands here in Rome at home. Really happy about it and grateful, as well.”

“It’s a dream to win in Rome, of course … for every maybe kid that’s playing in Italy,” Paolini said. “I’m enjoying the moment. It’s an amazing one,” the 29-year-old added.
