The Italian will return to Wimbledon to defend his title

The tennis world was left stunned when Jannik Sinner, the World No. 1, suffered one of the most dramatic collapses in Grand Slam history at the 2026 French Open.

In a major relief for fans, the Italian has successfully emerged from a comprehensive round of medical tests with no serious pathology detected, which means his Wimbledon title defence is firmly on schedule.

The 24-year-old was aiming to complete his Career Grand Slam in Paris, but was eliminated in stunning fashion in the second round at Roland-Garros on 28 May, defeated by World No. 56 Juan Manuel Cerúndolo in a match that swung wildly, with Sinner once leading 6-3, 6-2, 5-1 before cramping badly in the sweltering heat and eventually losing 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1.

Comprehensive investigations were promptly launched to address Sinner’s recurring bouts of physical weakness, with reports noting similar episodes dating back to the Australian Open earlier this year, where he risked an early exit due to cramps and dehydration.

His team initially sought an opinion at Juventus’ J Medical facility in Turin, where doctors found nothing alarming. However, wanting absolute certainty, they requested a second opinion at Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital.

Sinner spent around four hours there, undergoing a stress electrocardiogram, a Holter monitor, and a cardiac MRI.

The results brought good news, with tests revealing no underlying pathologies and all values returning normal.

The medical staff thereby concluded that Sinner had simply paid the price for the accumulated fatigue of an extraordinarily demanding schedule, having won consecutive titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome.

Having returned to Monte Carlo to resume training, Sinner will head directly to the All England Club, skipping all warm-up grass events, including the Halle Open. Like in Roland Garros, the Italian will enter SW19 as the outright favourite, particularly in Carlos Alcaraz’s absence.

However, the unpredictable sequence of results at the French Open creates an air of uncertainty, as the countdown to tennis’ most prestigious Slam begins.

What medical tests did Jannik Sinner undergo after his setback at the French Open?

Sinner and his team initially sought an opinion at Juventus’ J Medical facility in Turin, where doctors found nothing alarming. However, wanting absolute certainty, they requested a second opinion at Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital.

Sinner spent around four hours there, undergoing a stress electrocardiogram, a Holter monitor, and a cardiac MRI.

Will Jannik Sinner defend his title at Wimbledon 2026?
