Sinner and Fonseca to face off in maiden tour-level clash.
Jannik Sinner resumed his Indian Wells campaign with another straight-set win over Denis Shapovalov. In the previous round, the Italian dominated the Czech qualifier Dalibor Svrcina, dropping just two games en route to his second-round win.
Sinner, the World No. 2, bounced back after dropping serve in the opening game to win in 73 minutes. The 24-year-old sent down 14 winners and broke his Canadian rival four times en route to his fifth straight Round of 16 appearance at Indian Wells.
Sinner scripted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the left-handed Shapovalov for his 96th win at a Masters 1000 event. The No. 2 seed was a semi-finalist at the venue in 2022 and 2023. It remains the only hard-court ATP 1000 trophy he has yet to get his hands on, having won the other five.
The Italian also improved to 2-1 in head-to-head over Shapovalov and will now face Brazilian Joao Fonseca for the first time on tour.
Fonseca, 19, defeated Tommy Paul, 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 22 minutes for his tenth win at the ATP 1000 level. The Rio native improved on his 2025 result at Indian Wells by reaching the fourth round. It will be his first match against a Top-two player in Sinner.
The Brazilian teenager won 73% of first serve points and recorded 20 winners en route to booking a fourth-round appointment with the second seed Sinner.

Preview
Joao Fonseca almost didn’t make it this far at the 2026 Indian Wells Open. He was forced to battle back from the brink against Karen Khachanov, having saved two match points in the second set tie-break to defeat Khachanov, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4.
The young Brazilian is in uncharted territory as he prepares to face World No. 2 Sinner in the Round of 16. It will be the biggest match of his career by ranking.
Both Sinner and Fonseca shone through on their shotmaking in their respective third-round matches. For Sinner, it was the backhand that was the most effective weapon, while for Fonseca, it was his brutal forehand that won the day.
The winner of their fourth-round face-off will go on to face either Casper Ruud or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the quarterfinals.

Match prediction
Sinner will be looking to get back on track after a slow start to the 2026 season. After missing out on a third Australian Open title in January, the Italian will look to make amends at Indian Wells. The World No. 2 has never won here before and is currently playing some inspired tennis at the venue.
Sinner, a four-time Grand Slam champion, is the better mover than Fonseca at this stage of their careers. The more experienced Sinner is known to turn defence into attack more efficiently.
The unseeded Fonseca looks to have bounced back after a lacklustre campaign on home turf in Rio last month. To defeat the Italian on a hard court, Fonseca will once again fall back on his forehand while looking to turn up his serve quality a notch.
After his demolition job against Tommy Paul, Fonseca will be a heavy crowd favourite against Sinner, but that may not be enough to stop Sinner’s Indian Wells campaign.
Result: Jannik Sinner to win in three sets.
