Sinner and Tien earn hard-fought wins to progress into the last eight.

Jannik Sinner was tested in his first tour-level meeting with Joao Fonseca en route to his third straight quarter-final at Indian Wells Open. The Italian, a two-time semi-finalist at the venue, had to dig deep to find a way past Fonseca.

The Brazilian teenager went toe to toe with Sinner and held three set points in the opening set tiebreak, but failed to convert any. That was enough for the World No. 2 to force his way back into the match and win their maiden tour-level meeting 7-6(6), 7-6(4) in two hours.

Leading 5-2 in the fifth set, Sinner was serving for the match. But Fonseca was not about to go down without a fight and clawed his way back to even the score at 5-5 and force a second tie-break. The Brazilian’s monster forehand did most of the heavy lifting, with Fonseca sending one clocked at 119 mph back at Sinner.

It was Sinner’s 97th win at the ATP 1000 level and will face American Learner Tien next for a spot in the last four.

Tien outplayed a stubborn Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets, facing two match points en route to his first Indian Wells quarter-final. The American converted two crucial breakpoints, both in the second set, to force a third set.

The 20-year-old Tien took the match into a third-set tiebreak, with both players trading breaks of serve before the Californian sealed the win on his second match point. The final scoreline read 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) after two hours and 8 minutes on court and was his tenth Top 20 win.

Tien has put on an impressive show at the ATP 1000 event, registering his first main draw win at the venue against Adam Walton. His second-round win over Walton also brought up his 50th career win.

After breezing through his opening two rounds, Sinner found himself in some trouble against Joao Fonseca. The much-anticipated clash lived up to its hype.

The Brazilian kept Sinner on his toes all through their fourth-round clash, forcing the Italian to find another level before finally prevailing and taking an early lead in their career head-to-head.

Match prediction

A third straight semi-final at Tennis Garden is at stake for Sinner when he takes on Learner Tien in the last eight. Sinner lost to 20-year-old Jakub Mensik in Doha and will now face 20-year-old Tien in his bid to become the first Italian winner at Indian Wells.

Sinner did not play at Indian Wells last year and is the most successful Italian at Tennis Garden despite losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the 2023 and 2024 semifinals.

Tien, for his part, has vastly improved since their last meeting at the Beijing Open final. Sinner comfortably took the win in Beijing, 6-2, 6-2. Tien arrives at their latest face-off with a much-improved serve and with a title under his belt since they last met.

While Tien can be expected to put up more of a fight this time around, and will have the backing of the home crowd, that may not be enough to counter the Italian’s dominance from the baseline and big-match experience.

Result: Jannik Sinner to win in three sets.
