Injury Update: Positive news emerges from Jannik Sinner's camp

Jannik Sinner will miss his first-ever Grand Slam since making his major debut in 2019

Jannik Sinner’s decision to skip the US Open 2026 has already reshaped the men’s draw, leaving the field without its 2024 champion’s presence and opening the door for potentially a fresh Grand Slam winner in New York.

With Sinner out, the tournament now carries an added layer of unpredictability. The return of Carlos Alcaraz strengthens the field, but it remains to be seen if rustiness plays a role. Meanwhile, the 39-year-old Novak Djokovic finds another golden opportunity awaiting him, but also eyeing a maiden US Open title will be the likes of top seed Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton.

According to Sky Sport, the issue behind the withdrawal is a right knee problem, specifically an extra-articular tendon inflammation, which is considered the least serious version of this type of injury.

Had it flared up during a major tournament, Sinner likely would have pushed through and finished the event. But with no such urgency this time, he and his team chose caution over risk.

The report notes Sinner has spent the past week undergoing treatment at the J Medical clinic in Turin, and a decision on whether to continue that program into next week is still being worked out, along with when he can get back to on-court training. No official return date has been confirmed yet.

Per Sky Sport, the working plan points toward a comeback around the Beijing and Shanghai swing in late September, though nothing is being rushed. The bigger picture, as the outlet describes it, is that Sinner’s real target for the rest of the year remains the ATP Finals in Turin, and every step of his recovery is being managed with that in mind rather than any short-term deadline.

The major takeaway from the report is that the Italian’s withdrawal is not too serious, and unlike Alcaraz, who was sidelined for nearly four months, one can expect the 5-time Grand Slam champion Sinner to quickly return back to tennis action.
